Hotel Villa del Mare is located in Aquafredda di Maratea, in Basilicata, where the calcareous mountains meet the Tyrrhenian sea in a small coastal area in the Policastro gulf, offering nature,... Lovely room, friendly staff, great food. Spectacular views
It was beautiful but as with a lot of coastal Italian beaches they are shingle or stoney so buy plastic swimming shoes in a local shop it helps. The sea was so clear and plenty of fish swimming around so bring a snorkel. The beach umbrella and two sun loungers are €20 for the day but Alfonso at La Dimora di Alfonso will give you vouchers for other beaches to get discounts and tell you who to give his name to and get a discount in Fiumicello beach. I had a problem at Bar Le Pergole at this beach where we had been on two occasions and had food on the second day served by a young, impatient, disinterested waitress who appeared very unhappy in her choice of career. When we returned on a third occasion a staff thrust a bill towards me and speaking in Italian, initially I thought that he was saying that someone had left the table beside us without paying but later I think he was accusing us of not paying our bill for food on our second visit. I am sorry I didn't understand what this very rude and unpleasant man was saying as I had all our receipts for the food we had bought on our whole trip in my wallet and could have proved him wrong and rude. Obviously we didn't go back to Bar Le Pergole but went to Roberto at the far end of the beach.
