Communication in advance was already great because our questions about transfer and guide were immediately answered in a very friendly way. We were picked up at the airport in the morning and dropped in Sao Felipe for a stroll where we also bought some snacks. Around midday we were then taken to the accommodation. The drive was a public aluguer which made the transfer so much cheaper and the drives in the aluguers were always highlights during our time on Cabo Verde! We also already met our guide Marcello for the Volcano hike and he was great, too. Good English, super friendly and flexible. We were able to ask him all our questions! And listening to the stories of the 2014 eruption as well as life at such a special place was very valuable. We stayed for a few nights and it was one of the most impressive places on earth that we have ever seen. We really enjoyed going running, hiking, strolling and biking (we rented bikes at the Marisa hotel which was expensive but the bikes were incredibly good). The room was in one of the traditional round houses with a bathroom and had everything that we needed! Also the food was delicious and everyone was wonderful and friendly!! Thank you so much for this absolute highlight of our holiday and for taking such good care of us! An additional plus: the CHA wine! So good!

Rose was born here, he is the right man at the right place and his family is very nice. Rose can speak many languages, including french. The rooms are simple but have all you need. They are big, quiet and all around a patio. Board games are available and we could play Awale and learn a new way to play with Michael, the son. The breakfast was really good and a bit different each day, with cakes... We got a lot of explanations from Rose, who is also a guide if you need. Communication was really easy with them, even before arriving. A "collectivos" picked us up at the airport and Rose organized another one to drop us to Sao Filipe. We eat at the Guesthouse in the evenings. At midday, we went several times to Isabel Restaurant ( actually Isabel is Rose's sister but we didn't know it the first time!). By the way, Rose has 6 brothers/sisters at Portela.

Staying here allows you not only to experience the unique volcanic landscape, but also to understand the powerful relationship between people and nature. The location is extraordinary — we were right in front of an incredible view of Pico do Fogo volcano. Waking up each morning with such a majestic and powerful presence before us made the experience even more special. This is a place that teaches humility. It reminds us how small we are before Mother Nature, and at the same time, how strong the human spirit can be. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to witness such courage and to share, even briefly, in their story. We highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for something authentic, meaningful, and unforgettable.
