The rating of this hotel should be higher. They have made a major renovation and it is a great hotel now. One of the best I stayed in Argentina, worth paying a little extra for. The room was modern and spacious. Breakfast was great. They have their own parking garage with plenty of space. Recommended

We stayed for two nights, very design hotel, nice atmosphere and views. The room was cozy with heating, very comfy, nice mattress. The staff is very friendly and professional, Naomi was so kind and prepared delicious dinners! We had excursions with Juan who was an excellent guide and driver! We enjoyed our stay very much, the region is beautiful and we recommend Altos del Penon strongly.

I love the excursions available, food was excellent and there are many places to go. In Fiambala many shops only take local money wallets out cash, and I had to pay high fees to get cash. Get the cash before you go

These comments do not apply only to Santa Maria, they apply equally to other small towns in Argentina. It's very difficult for foreigners to pay for their accommodation as very few small establishments accept credit or debit cards, they almost all want Argentinian cash or Argentinian bank transfers. Of course foreigners don't have Argentinian bank accounts. And obtaining cash from ATMs is an absolute nightmare, at least it was for us. Using a Chilean debit card, the maximum amount we could withdraw was ARS60,000 (about USD50) for which there was a 20% charge on the Argentinian side, not to mention poor exchange rate and Chilean side charges. A VERY expensive exercise.
