It's a place largely devoid of cultural life — there are no libraries, no bookstores, and the local scene revolves almost entirely around mining and agribusiness. The political atmosphere is aggressive, marked by a deeply reactionary and backward mentality. For someone who isn't from the region, it can be an alienating experience — a closed, insular environment where ignorance often prevails.
