Alajuela is the perfect place to stay one night when entering the country and when you are departing. Its so close to the airport only $5. for a taxi. We enjoyed the local food in the market center which we stumbled upon. Even though its huge, its kinda hidden with 4 entrances on a whole block. We loved that it was just up the street a few from our stay at the Backpackers hostel.
We used Alajuela as a jumping off point for Poas Volcano so we didn't spend much time in town. There doesn't seem to be many tourist amenities. We did eat at Sr. Patacon & Dona Arepa (a Colombian restaurant) 50 meters south of the post office) which was excellent and had a great dessert selection.
Stayed at Hotel La Guadia on the first trip, Hotel Martino the second. I liked both places though they are entirely different. The town of Alajuela is pretty nice, too and I walked around it a bit.
Although we only had 1/2 a day to explore, Alajuela seemed to be a great place to walk around and enjoy some good food. I would recommend Yellow- a little coffee shop downtown...look them up on trip advisor, you won't be disappointed.
We only experienced Alajuela briefly. We enjoyed the small mall with food court where we stopped for tea and returned for dinner. Driving through downtown, it was sweet to see the Easter celebration in the community.
People were very helpful even though they spoke no English. Traffic and people went out of their way to accommodate elderly persons. Lots of busses, though it helps to know which goes where. Tried to eat at small local restaurants. Loved the Alajuela Cathedral and park in front. Didn't have much time but browsed the stores within several blocks around the hotel.
Beautiful and historic city without traffic and noise of San Jose. Near international airport but quiet and walkable. We learned our way walking around town and made lots of great discoveries in Alajuela and nearby.
Alajuela is a big city. We went to the recaté zoo where ther are literally all kinds of rescued animals and birds. We wanted to go to Volcan Poas, but the cost of a taxi was prohitive. The nearest restaurant is call Cherys and the food and service is great.
La Fortuna has a lot to offer: hot springs, horseback riding, zip lining, hiking, white water rafting, coffee tours, and much more. I usually try to find a cheaper hotel, and spend most of my money on tours and activities. Hot springs are a must. Before booking, compare prices from different sellers - for example, the day pass (with dinner) to Baldi hot springs could cost a foreigner anything between $35 and $60, and the lower prices are found at info centers in town, not at Baldi front desk! Also, there are some free hot springs and hiking possibilities. There are many nice places to eat in town, my personal favorite is Rainforest Café. Don't buy souvenirs there, they are badly overpriced! All those things can be easily found in San Jose or Alajuela downtown at half the price. Jeep-boat-jeep to Monteverde is fun. The public bus between La Fortuna and San Jose is a reliable and cheap transportation option. La Fortuna center has nice food supermarkets and drugstores, so no need to stash beforehand!
Sorry one night in Alajuela was to short but liked it more than San Jose had two weeks in CR Good experience would like to have More time

Stayed here twice, both on our arrival day to SJO and an evening prior to our departure day from SJO. Host Johnny was gratious, a good cook and very helpful. Breakfast was good. Facility was clean and is very nearby (minutes) to airport and rental car agencies, yet felt very safe. Didn’t have time to use the pool, but it looked inviting. Did not have time to visit some of the coffee plantations, Volcano or Zoo in this Alajuela area, but was able explore Alajuela city center for a few hours, only a short drive away.

The breakfast was a an excellent way to start the day with 4 choices & the coffee was delicious! B&B was centrally located to Mercado, el centro & historical building in walking distance. Host Randy, was very welcoming & helped us with our visit to Alajuela between flights. Truly a great guy & host~ Beautiful garden area that he let my dog rider run in to release some energy. Would recommend to anyone passing through as you get the Costa Rican feel of life here ~

Beautiful old hotel. They serve breakfast early (at 6:00am) which is great if you need to get your day started early, and coffee even a little earlier. Nice selection of hot breakfast choices, cooked to order. Location is good, very close to the main square in Alajuela with many places to eat and shop within walking distance. It seemed like a safe enough place to walk around in the dark, at least relatively early in the evening.

The design of the hostel is very modern and the rooms are clean. I felt safe there. It is also very centrally located and only about 400m from the alajuela Central Park and the alajuela sign. They had a free taxi shuttle to the airport which was excellent. I took the 11:30am one but there's one for 6:00am, 11:30am and 2pm and I think it runs up until night time as well. A generally decent hostel for a short stay in the city.

What a wonderful place we discovered in Alajuela! We stayed in the newly built casita on the property, and it was absolutely perfect for us (mom and two kids). The casita is spotless, with plenty of space for us. The hosts were warm and friendly, and breakfast was delicious. It is just a few minutes from the airport, making it incredibly convenient for coming or going. We will definitely be back!

Beautiful property! It's a garden oasis just 15 minutes from the airport and 8 minutes from the center of Alajuela. We could have stayed and enjoyed our room and the gardens for several days without leaving. Staff was friendly and helpful. The owner was up at 5:30am to call us a taxi, hand us a 'to go' breakfast, and wish us safe travels on the morning we left to fly home.

Beautiful, lush grounds full of specimen plants, accessible by a series of paved (and unpaved) trails. Wonderful view of Alajuela from our large cabina and generous patio. Kids and adults enjoyed the mildly heated "sunset" infinity pool. Plentiful breakfast buffet of scrambled eggs, gallo pinto, sliced fruit (papaya, mango, pineapple), banana and other breads, fresh juice, etc.

Nice views, more peaceful than alajuela, private tables outside of every room, nice dining area. I think the rooms with a balcony would be nice (especially on 2nd floor), and the spaciousness would probably make it more comfortable of an option when traveling with children and with a vehicle

The hostel is in great proximity to the airport and also the Alajuela area which is safe in areas explained by staff. There are lots of restaurants a couple of blocks away. The hostel is clean, quiet and safe. The bus stop, villa bonita is a mere 10minute taxi ride.

close to the airport, AC worked great. Safe property close to anything you would need restaurants/ Sodas. Staff was very helpful. We were able to go to downtown Alajuela and enjoy a nice dinner it was about 15 minutes away.

The staff is really wonderful, and the free shuttle is great too. Just keep in mind if you need to take a taxi that many drivers don’t know where the hotel is, so just be sure to say it’s near Pulperia Julieta in Alajuela

Super friendly owner, got up extra early to drive us to the airport. Room was fine. Location in Alajuela was good, great restaurant (Jalapenos) around the corner. Airport 10 mins away.

Clean and quiet home in a gated community. Safe, but still close to Alajuela and airport. While the host didn’t speak English, we could use a translate app to communicate.
