Ciudad Real is just a base-town for side-trips to the surrounding places. There are NO wind mills there, the photos you see on the illustrations are from Alcazar de San Juan, Campo Criptana or Consuegra. In Ciudad Real, there's just nothing to see.

Almagro is a historical city with a 16th century feeling.

Almagro is a historical city with a 16th century feeling. Get lost walking its small streets (like Calle de las Bernardas). Enjoy its warm people, their traditions (like Las Cruces in May), their excellent wine (both white and red), and food (Manchego cheese or lomo de orza at the Restaurante de las Murallas). Spend time in the main square (Plaza Mayor) and visit the Corral de la Comedia (a historical theatre that competes with Shakespeare's Globe).

The town centre was quite compact and flat for pedestrians. There was no tourist office that we could find so we relied on leaflets from our hotel although there were a few good on line sites which gave good information. There were a few good winery shops on the outskirts of town where it was possible to buy the local wine direct from the producers. There are museums in the area that should be visited if you get the chance but most require a car journey. The main plaza was very well done and had a few cafes and bars around it but we didn’t enjoy the busy motor traffic.

This would be a great place to stay if you had business to do in Valdepenas or, like us, you wanted a place to break your journey on your way to Andalucia. The kitchen was very well equipped so we ate in our apartment as the weather was extremely wet. The town is centred around wine production and it would be a great place for wine lovers.

It's a small place with a few cute shops and one church, but it's in close vicinity to a National Park with waterfalls (if you have a car) and if you don't have a car one can take the train to Alcazar de San Juan, there's very good birding and nature walking spots there with flamingo's and storks. We used it as a stop-over before coming back to Madrid.

We travel with our dog and this hotel is nearly perfect for an overnight stop. Dogs not allowed in the bar or resteraunt. Rooms are separate from the main building . Covered free parking. Easy access to country track for exercise. Staff friendly but only a little English. Resteraunt is great value at set price. Breakfast is good and served in bar. House wine is local to Mudela and decent.

Small quiet town, with some historical buildings and a history of trains, because of the rail hub. A walk throug the city takes about 2 hours. As a tourist, ideal as a stop for the night. Remarkable is the effort of the communidad to offer the residents modern and useful infrastructure.

The main plaza is beautiful, as are many of the older streets. There are many cultural attractions, especially for those who know a little bit about Spanish culture and history. I highly recommend the restaurant called "La Gavilla", which I tried for the first time on this visit. A nice place for breakfast is the "Rincón de la Plaza"--good food and a highly efficient and energetic wait staff.

The city centre is ok.

The city centre is ok. This is not a turistic place, and there is not so much to see if you compare this city to others in Andalucia or to Toledo. This depends on the history, and natural ctastrophy that have destroyed part of the original ancient buildings. But it is a good place for a stop over and to enjoy some tapas and vermuth!

Sadly, I wasn't able to stay in Almagro for very long.

Sadly, I wasn't able to stay in Almagro for very long. It was an overnight stay as part of a longer trip. My general impressions are that you could spend a couple of days there, possibly longer, exploring the town and its surroundings. The main square is interesting, with its historic town hall and a first floor 'balcony' which stretches almost its whole border. Also in the main square is a good selection of restaurants and tapas bars. Almagro is very 'walkable', and flat. From my hotel, a steady wander took me around a lot of it in a couple of hours. One thing I would say is that Almagro is a little off the beaten track, and as such is very Spanish. If you make the effort to learn some of the language (which is a useful tip for anywhere), it will enhance and make your visit a lot easier. In my time there I didn't hear any language other than Spanish being spoken.
