My wife and I had a wonderfully relaxing stay at Mels Retreat. The cozy atmosphere made us feel right at home, and the spa jacuzzi and sauna were the perfect touches to help us unwind even more. Mel was very friendly and accommodated all our requests. We loved their home made fresh lemon loaf treat - delicious! We wish if we could stay one more night.

Accommodation is ideallic and in a quiet residential area. 40 winks seemed to have everything we needed during our stay and the breakfast was an added bonus for us as it was light and not indulgent. Also we could tell a lot of thought had been put into to all the amenities including the UK plug adapters for us.
More importantly...
Fiona was excellent and very easy to talk to. We really enjoyed our conversations and felt completely at peace during our stay at 40 winks!

Created years ago by the visionary Barry, this is a place where you can sleep in a train, a ship, an airplane, or even a Hobbit house. Inside a gigantic barn, a restaurant and a theater were built, filled with all kinds of memorabilia; in the past, it even hosted shows featuring pigs, sheep, and chickens. So the location has a lot to explore while it is very close to the Waitomo caves!

Helen was a lovely host, made great breakfast and kept us warm and comfortable. Made Abseil Inn a home for us for two nights. Beer and wine available for a very reasonable price and made our evenings fun and enjoyable.

We didn’t actually visit the Waitomo Caves , but explored other caves and geological features in the area, which are outstanding.
Visit the Marakopa waterfall, The Piripiri caves, the Maungapohue Natural Bridge, the Ruakuri walkway ( including spectacular caves) and continue driving out to beautiful Marakopa and on to Kiritehere beach.
Such a lot to see within an hours drive!

I enjoyed the peacefulness of the countryside.
I enjoyed the peacefulness of the countryside.
The have a small kitchen, with gas oven cooker, fridge.
There are two bedrooms. Double bed. and the other has bunks.
The shower is very small. Big outdoor bathtub! We stayed there as we visited Waitomo Caves the next day. We bought our own food to cook.

Absolutely amazing experience, definitely once in a lifetime :) the staff at Waitomo Caves experience were so good, made my friend and I feel so safe and enjoy the experience immensely. Very knowledgeable and entertaining as well! We did the Blackwater rafting experience and I thought it was the perfect length of time- about 3 hours- weren't in the water for long enough to get cold or need to pee!! Highly recommend.

BECAUSE OF THE THREATENED CYCLONE LOTS OF PEOPLE HAD CANCELLED THEIR VISIT SO WE MANAGED TO GET AN EARLIER TOUR. HOWEVER AS THE RIVER HAD RISEN WE HAD TO ENTER AND EXIT CAVE THROUGH THE SAME ROUTE, NOT A PROBLEM BUT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO HAVE LEFTTHE CAVE ON THE BOAT.
THE TOUR AROUND THE CAVE WAS GREAT AND THE BOAT RIDE TO SEE THE GLOW WORMS WAS BRILLIANT.
