The location was at the top of the mountain with a magnificent view. The cabin had everything you could need, nestled amongst a much loved garden. Carolyn was very friendly and welcoming as was Lacey the dog. It was just so peaceful and private. A unique experience in nature.

Such a cool and lovely place. First you will receive the best booking confirmation ever. Very, very clear and honest. The rooms are unique and you feel everything was selected carefully. The "livingroom" is cozy and has all you need. Walls are not very thick, so if you are sensitiv, bring ear plugs. Sitting on the porch after a long ride was super relaxing and you feel fully immersed by nature.
Make sure you plan enough time for breakfast. This is sensational. We unfortunately had booked an early gloworm cave tour and had to rush and I still feel so unpolite. The hosts make a great breakfast with some special food and ingrediences. I wish I had more time to taste all the ~ 10 different honeys that were offered and introdeced one by one.
You even get recommendations for places to see on your trip (ice cream place in Pokeno!). So all in all a wonderful and highly recommended stay.

I have visited a few other caves and I was disappointed that there were not many glow worms to see. I would not recommend this trip however if you haven't visited many caves then you may enjoy it. After the visit we drove to a waterfall not far from the caves and this was good.

I enjoyed the peacefulness of the countryside.
I enjoyed the peacefulness of the countryside.
The have a small kitchen, with gas oven cooker, fridge.
There are two bedrooms. Double bed. and the other has bunks.
The shower is very small. Big outdoor bathtub! We stayed there as we visited Waitomo Caves the next day. We bought our own food to cook.

Our tour of the Ruakura cave was great.
Our tour of the Ruakura cave was great. Our tour guide held the kids' attention the entire way and answered all of their questions. The caves are amazing to see and this walking tour is just the right length, even for young kids.
Don't forget to book ahead and take a warm top as it is quite chilly down there.

My first trip was 45 years ago.
My first trip was 45 years ago. In comparison back then there was no boat ride. So that was a nice way of finishing the tour. It was summer back then so there were more glow worms. So best time would be in the warmer months. We’re allowed to take photos at the very end only. Would have been nice to have been able to take a few of the caves itself without a flash as memorabilia. Also with groups going through close together it was hard to hear what our guide was saying over other guide’s voices. “Cup of tea” (John) was an excellent guide and very humorous and knowledgeable.
