Helen was a lovely host, made great breakfast and kept us warm and comfortable. Made Abseil Inn a home for us for two nights. Beer and wine available for a very reasonable price and made our evenings fun and enjoyable.

Created years ago by the visionary Barry, this is a place where you can sleep in a train, a ship, an airplane, or even a Hobbit house. Inside a gigantic barn, a restaurant and a theater were built, filled with all kinds of memorabilia; in the past, it even hosted shows featuring pigs, sheep, and chickens. So the location has a lot to explore while it is very close to the Waitomo caves!

Basic but clean. Very comfy beds. Was excellent for our one night stay. No wifi as wasn’t working.
Panicked initially as wasn’t a fan in room as promised (menopause hot flushes so needed) but had to ask around and another guest says there’s a young girl who I can ask etc. bless her she called the owners and eventually got through to them and dropped one off.

This cabin is super cute! And the main area had a great place to chill or chat and kitchen facilities. We enjoyed walking around the farm and seeing the animals. The place is full of fun quirky details and character!

I have visited a few other caves and I was disappointed that there were not many glow worms to see. I would not recommend this trip however if you haven't visited many caves then you may enjoy it. After the visit we drove to a waterfall not far from the caves and this was good.

I enjoyed the peacefulness of the countryside.
I enjoyed the peacefulness of the countryside.
The have a small kitchen, with gas oven cooker, fridge.
There are two bedrooms. Double bed. and the other has bunks.
The shower is very small. Big outdoor bathtub! We stayed there as we visited Waitomo Caves the next day. We bought our own food to cook.

Our tour of the Ruakura cave was great.
Our tour of the Ruakura cave was great. Our tour guide held the kids' attention the entire way and answered all of their questions. The caves are amazing to see and this walking tour is just the right length, even for young kids.
Don't forget to book ahead and take a warm top as it is quite chilly down there.

My first trip was 45 years ago.
My first trip was 45 years ago. In comparison back then there was no boat ride. So that was a nice way of finishing the tour. It was summer back then so there were more glow worms. So best time would be in the warmer months. We’re allowed to take photos at the very end only. Would have been nice to have been able to take a few of the caves itself without a flash as memorabilia. Also with groups going through close together it was hard to hear what our guide was saying over other guide’s voices. “Cup of tea” (John) was an excellent guide and very humorous and knowledgeable.
