Matala is a magical village on the southern coast of Crete, known for its golden beach, clear turquoise waters, and the mysterious caves carved into the cliffside. The atmosphere in the village is relaxed and artistic, with colorful murals, live music, and a genuine sense of peace. The beach is perfect for swimming and sunbathing, and just a short hike away is the stunning Red Beach, ideal for those looking for a more secluded spot. The town itself is small but full of charm, with cozy tavernas and friendly locals. We stayed at a quiet, clean hotel that felt like a peaceful retreat after days in the sun. We originally booked just a couple of nights, but Matala was so amazing that we extended our stay. Waking up each morning to the sound of the sea and enjoying a coffee with a view of the cliffs made it hard to leave. Matala is more than a destination—it’s a feeling, one that stays with you long after you’ve gone.
