One of the best ryokans we’ve stayed at in Japan. The location feels straight out of a Ghibli movie, with over 300 years of history and an amazing atmosphere. We stayed for 3 nights and enjoyed some of the best Japanese food each day at the ryokan restaurant. Since both me and my partner have tattoos, we booked the private onsen every evening through reception. The real highlight was the staff. They went above and beyond to make our stay special, spoke good conversational English, and checked in daily to ensure everything was perfect. Highly recommended for an authentic, cozy ryokan experience!

Excellent service! The staff at Pension Puutaro were incredibly friendly and attentive, going above and beyond to make my stay comfortable. Highly recommend for their exceptional hospitality!

야마가타에 자리한 Guesthouse Mintaro Hut에서 머물러보세요. 숙소는 자오 온천 스키 리조트에서 18km 거리에 있습니다. 이 1성급 게스트하우스에서는 에어컨, 공용 욕실, 무료 Wi-Fi가 완비된 객실을 이용하실 수 있습니다. 구내에는 전용 주차장이 마련되어 있습니다. 게스트하우스 자체가 매우 이뻤습니다! 가운데 난로도 있고, 아침에 씻으러 내려가면서 봤던 거실 풍경이 정말 이뻤어요! 공용욕실 화장실 각각 2개씩 있는데, 기다리는거 없이 원할때마다 사용했어요! 수건 객실 중앙복도에서 무료로 사용가능해요! 샴푸, 바디워시, 린스 다 있고, 치약칫솔, 면도기 1회용으로 비치되어있어요! 무엇보다 욕실 화장실 다 깔끔해서 사용하기 좋았습니다:) 저녁을 직접 만들어서 제공해주셨는데 맛있게 잘 먹었어욯ㅎ 히데 사장님과 다른 게스트 분들과 저녁먹으면서 이런저런 얘기하면서 재밌게 잘 보냈습니다😆 자오 스키장이랑 야마가타 공항 셔틀 관련해서 사장님과 게스트분에게 여러 정보도 주셨어요👍🏻 또 사장님께서 직접 재배하신 열매로 만든 술도 주셨는데 탄산수랑 마시니 아주 그냥 찰떡궁합이었습니다!! 조식도 아침에 빵, 스프, 커피 제공해주셔서 든든히 먹었어요!! 게스트하우스인데 평점이 웬만한 호텔보다 좋아서 신기했는데 가보시면 이해가 됩니닿ㅎㅎ +고양이 좋아하시는분들은 무조건 추천드려요! 불멍 때리는 고양이를 구경가능해요!

This is a great pension run by a lovely family. The husband picked us up at the bus station and drove us to the pension and also took us to the slopes in the morning. They gave us a coupon for renting gear and a map explaining the different onsen options around town. Their English is pretty limited, but they are happy to use Google translate. Also, it was not a big deal, but I think it is important for foreign guests to be aware that ski culture in Japan sort of assumes you are eating dinner at your accommodation. We did not know this and did not book dinner at the hotel. Most restaurants in town were fully booked with reservations (although there is a convenience store with good takeaway food), so try to book dinner at the hotel or make a dinner reservation somewhere well in advance. We were very luck and managed to make a reservation at the Mongolian lamb place Kasheru for the second night and that was amazing. But we saw restaurants turning people away repeatedly because everywhere in town was full. Also, the family will not pick you up by car any later that 6:45 pm (perfectly reasonable) and the public ski shuttles don't run on weekdays, so you need to pre-book a taxi if dinner will end later than that (which it probably will since most restaurants open at 6 pm). And there are not a lot of taxis and no Uber. I wish I had realized all of this up front, but that was our own ignorance and our stay was great regardless. Again, this is just the local ski culture and not the hotel's fault. It's just helpful information for future guests.

The property is only a 15 minute walk, or short bus on weekends to the ski lift, very convenient. We also rented our ski clothes and ski equipment directly through Kobaya House, they communicated very well helping us arrange everything in the lead up to the stay. While we were there they were fantastic hosts going above and beyond to ensure everyone had a good time, the food was cooked fresh everyday and they joined us one day for snowboarding to show us some really good spots. couldn’t recommend more, we ended up extending an extra day we loved it so much
