The hospitality of the host Maradona and his family was present during our entire stay. They were there for us at any moment. Incredibly nice people. He brought us to the old Center at any time that we would like, and he did this for all guests. The room was very clean and nice all around. Breakfast was good as well. If i'm ever back at Gjirokastër, this is the place to be.

From the moment we arrived, the staff were so friendly and attentive. The square by the hotel was being repaved but the reception team came out happily to meet us with our cases and the baby. Service was exceptional. Silva assisted us in a trip to the Blue Eye Spring.

Fly to Tirana International Airport, then drive 230km south to Gjirokastër (approx. 4 hours). Alternatively, from within Albania, take a direct bus from Tirana (4-5 hours). No direct water transport available. Transfers may be required for international travellers.

Spent a week here in April 2024 – so many positives …
Purely electronic passport gates at Tirana airport – an advantage if low on passport stamp space? Swift bus into town centre. Euros very widely accepted, 1:1 with the local Lek currency. Felt safe, met many great people and enjoyed a lot of raki; wine rather so-so, beer better … Trains are close to non-existent; negotiating the minibus service involves arriving and paying on the spot – found it straightforward; typical price: Tirana to Gjirokastra – 4 hours - £10 ..; saw stunning mountain scenery in last 2 hours, and when crossing the mountains from this town to Sarande port (1hr15, £3.30). Accommodation costs very favourable: enjoyed flats at £9 pppn. From Sarande, easy enough to catch a ferry or hydrofoil to Corfu, as a return airport – ca/ £20 single, 30-60 mins. Albaniatourguide proved a very useful online resource. Looking forward to next trip: apparently 12 degrees even in January …

Only had time to visit the castle. Spent several hours there. Would love to come back for the folk arts festival and visit some of the houses with the specific architecture that put this place on the UNESCO list.

The city is pretty but unfortunately the vast majority of it is rundown with only the bazaar and some houses being maintained to a level fit for a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and once you go away from the bazaar especially at night it feels really lonely and sad. Gjirokaster has become very touristic in the past few years with the old bazaar being constantly crowded with youths from Western European countries who do not respect the place and openly smoke hashish and get drunk.
The road to get to the old town is a traditional stone path that while beautiful is a disaster because it destroys your car's suspension, has very steep grades and if another car comes from the other direction good luck! Because of this and the lack of parking in the old town (even among hotels that advertise having parking) you become a prisoner of the old town. During the summer because of the type of stone the city is built of (also found in the mountain Gjirokaster is built on) it is very hot even during the night making the entire experience very unpleasant.
Most museums/attractions are basic and the few English descriptions that can be found are very nationally charged which reminds me more of the rhetoric of the 1940s than 2023. The vast majority of Albanians, even those who work in this "tourism industry" cannot speak English at all or speak it very badly making communication difficult and moreover they are not really friendly with tourists.
Gjirokaster like Albania in general is about as expensive as Greece or even Italy while effectively offering a touristic product akin to a 3rd world country. Unless corruption is rooted out, Albanians stop emigrating and the economy and democratic institutions develop I frankly do not think I will ever visit Gjirokaster again.

When in Albania, Gjirokaster should definitely be on your list. The views from the castle are amazing and a visit to the Bazaar for those Instagram pictures is also a must.
But what we enjoyed the most was the travel between Berat and Gjirokaster. Make sure to stop at Tepelene to fill your water bottles with some fresh water and try some deliciously baked fresh trout. Find a small road next to the river, drive in and get yourself wet in the pristine clear water.
We had a big corner room, nicely decorated with a wooden ceiling and wall paintings.
The whole building felt freshly renovated and was super clean. Shower was so relaxing and of high stNdard
The stuff was very friendly. Breakfast super with eggs/veggis/ cake etc
When you get lost- line we did with google- park at the castle, walk down the stairs and a friendly member of the stuff will navigate you to the hotel
Staying at the pool after a long, exhausting stroll through the steep streets of Gjirokaster was heaven
The hotel owners was an older couple and they treated us like family! Upon arrival, we were given the grand tour and the Obelisk was only a few steps away. The room was a great size and everything was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was by far the best we had in Albania! The owner cooks everything and they take such good care of their guests! We loved everything about this four room hotel!! Definitely worth a stop just to have care and hospitality of the owners! Thank you!
This place is right in middle of old town with spectacular view and everything is near by. This place is run by old couple who are very sweet and prepare best breakfast in entire Gjirokaster! Google map landed us to a different route and it was under construction so - when we called owner he came down to the place we were and took us to hotel , he also found us free parking spot ! All the tourist attractions are very near to this stay and it is such a vibe to be here
We loved this hotel!!! Marcel and his family are so kind and welcoming. The hotel and room is stunning, decorated beautifully. We are at their restaurant for dinners and the food was some of the best we’ve had in Albania, loved this veggie platter. We had many bottles of their homemade white wine. the breakfast was one of our favorites while on our 6 week trip. We were so glad we stayed here outside of the city, it was very calm and centering. Don’t hesitate to book
Stayed at the Superior Double room which was a fantastic authentic Ottoman style room. Irvin at the reception was exceptional and gave us a great tour of the hotel, with explanation of the city's main sites visible from the balcony on top of the hotel, as well as serving us a lovely tea which was soothing after my drive coming from Berat (passed through a rainy storm!). Hotel Kalemi definetly won on the list of nicest hotels I ever went to.
This hotel was excellent in many ways! Maradona, his wife and father ALL worked to make our stay comfortable and drove us wherever we wanted to go. Maradona was very available by phone and even spoke with our Sarande bus driver to have him drop us off so he could pick us up! The room was full of light with a great hot shower and hot delicious breakfast! They had roses planted all around the terrace which had a great view of Gjirokaster.
The host Martin was awesome - he helped us a lot when our car broke down and gave us great recommendations for restaurants. The hotel is located in the oldest street in Gjirokaster and very close to the old town. It just opened a few months ago and is very new. The rooms were very clean and comfortable, the bathrooms were very modern. The view from the balcony (see photo) is also really great, and the breakfast there was delicious.
Very comfortable. The place was super clean. From the garden of the hotel you can have a good view of the castle. The road to the hotel is steep but all the roads in Gjirokaster are steep, the good part is that the hotel is considered in the beginning of the bazaar area so we didn't walk too much with the bags to reach the hotel, and the next day it was easy for us to reach the main road again for Tirana bus.
One of the best rooms we have ever booked! We liked it so much!! Very clean and beautiful room, perfect location (near to the center). The owners very friendly and the did the best for us. We ate also dinner in the hotel's restaurant and we ate delicious and traditional albanian food!! The breakfast was full!! Our room (double deluxe) had perfect view and was perfect decorated! 🥰
one word : Fantastic ! the hotel looks over a part of Gjirokaster and is stylish. it combines the character of the old building but inside it for sure not old fashioned but stylish. The hotel is managed by a family which takes very well care of their guests. we had a lovely dinner, tasty and better than in the most restaurants . we would therefore recommend the hotel to all.
Good modern hotel with a good restaurant and a fabulous view. Everything is very close - but Gjirokaster is best seen from a distance. Many houses are abandoned or in bad repair. In winter, most things are closed. But the castle alone is worth the trip, and from there the view cannot be beaten. Friendly staff will help you with your luggage, see below.
Our stay with Tatiana was a highlight of our trip to Gjirokaster. Her warm welcome made us feel at home straight away.
This beautiful hotel is very central and fits in as a historic building. The room was spacious and spotlessly clean.
Don't miss out on the wonderful breakfast. It was a delicious treat!
This guesthouse is conveniently situated on one of the cobbled streets that lead you straight to the old city center of Gjirokaster. The room is spacious, has a fridge and air conditioning, which is nice to have in Albanian summer. The host was very approachable in spite of the language barrier.
Lovely hotel that truly lives up to its boutique label! The hotel is run by an extremely friendly mum and son, who made the stay really special. The breakfast was delicious and copious, views from the rooms amazing. Decor modern but with a lot of character. Best stay in Albania.
I highly recommend Hotel Kalemi. Such great staffs, beautiful views from the room & balcony of the hotel, and beautifully designed hotel. We will stay again in the future when we come back to visit Albania. Breakfast was delicious, and rooms were very spacious.
Beautifully decorated and comfortable high end hotel in Gjirokaster. If the weather had been better the views would have been amazing. We used the small gym a couple of times which had what you needed for a workout. The staff were very friendly and attentive.
Super place to stay in Gjirokäster ! We found easily a place to park outside and then the hotel is perfectly situated in the center of the city. Room was clean and calm, breakfast on the terrace was excellent ! Thanks a lot to Loula who was so kind with us :)
Close to everything that Gjirokaster has to offer. Beautiful view of the town and castle. Really interesting history and lots to see and do. The guest house and breakfast are both great, really nice owner and her son is a great asset and helpful.
Just getting to know Maradona is special, the hotel is traditional bit with a modern touch. AC and WIFI working with no problems. The owner will help you with everything. If you are in Gjirokaster I would definitely reccomend.
