I have stayed here many times. They have finally started to refurb the bedrooms. They were very tired before. I stayed in a courtyard room and the new decour was simple yet effective. Food was Good as usual.
Even though the food is good, it's never inspirational. Could try pushing things a bit there.
lovely building , great ambiance and friendly helpful staff .
bedroom very small , quite claustrophobic with low beams .
The location, the hospitality of the staff. The room facilities were excellent.
The room was fantastic , I loved the castle , the food . Everything was first class luxury
The food was excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful.
As a first time guest I feel that the signs could be improved. It was not clear on arrival that parking was available inside the courtyard. I parked outside and moved it in after check in. Reception was tucked away and not well signed. The stable block rooms were tricky to open the outside door lock, I have arthritus and I struggled on all occasions. The room was clean and comfortable but the only mirror was on the inside of the wardrobe door, which only opened 90 degrees, making it tricky to use for hair drying.
The castle was beautiful inside and and out. The meal at the black knight was superb!:) The room was amazing! Very tudoresque!
My partner was not overly excited about the chips at the restaurant.
How stunning the Northumbrian suites are. Narnia style toilets. The whole place was warm, peaceful and welcoming. Heating was on all the time which was lovely. Staff were pleasant and helpful.
Price of food in knight restaurant.
Amazing historic building; extremely comfortable, elegant and quirky room; helpful, welcoming staff.
Atmosphere, friendliness, sense of occasion, uniqueness and quality.
No olives or savoury nibbles in the Library bar with our wine ; We were willing to pay, but none available.
I stayed on my own and I literally had 40 minutes sleep due to being next to the boiler and it's being broken ! I changed rooms the next day but they did not seem bothered or offer to refund me so I spent the day at the wedding tired !!
The room (46) in the castle, well worth the extra cost. Drink prices were reasonable fo a hotel
Bed and room
Hotel fantastic rooms excellent, clean bedding and spotless. Restaurant and food first class food served on piping hot plates. Staff very polite and helpful. Little things mean a lot and the staff made sure all boxes ticked.
Because of the location you are prepared to pay that little extra, however the pricing of drinks is way above the normal prices that I have paid at many top UK hotels. Bar staff need to be shown how to make liqueur coffee's they should be presented as follows the black coffee first and cream sitting on top of the black coffee to be presented at table looking as a Black and White drink. Not as through it had been whisked together making it look like sludge. Easily rectified/
The room was excellent and very clean. It's too hot or cold which I normally find when travelling to the North East. This is my 3rd visit and every time it gets better.
Nothing all very good
It was my first experience of staying in such a magnificent castle. The entire layout and interiors added to the feeling of being part of a historical building.
Great staff great food had a fantastic stay
Ambience and location are excellent. Restaurant food quality was superb. All the staff were helpful and friendly on every occasion.
Room was a bit small for the price and the heating inadequate with outside temperature of around three degrees. Had to keep a sweater on whilst working at the desk.
You needed more seating in the Banquet bar area.
It was so old but done up very well . Some of the furnish reminded me of my mothers years ago. It took me up back in time which was nice.
Shame didn't see the gost Lily ! !
The hotel is ideally located for acess to Durham and the coastal areas and a welcome retreat at the end of the day We loved the history and the 'oldness' of the place - Everything was in line with the price - Nothing was plastic !!!!!
Beautiful room Amazing facilities Very comfy
Great time everthing was first class will be going back
Location was stunning and the evening meal very good
The hotel is in need of an overhaul! Whilst very clean the decor is looking jaded and some of the furnishings in the bedroom need upgrading. We were disappointd as this hotel is supposed to be 4 star - it isnt. The breakfast was average but the service poor - I would expect real coffee not instant! The outfits worn by the staff at reception and in the bar although supposed to reflect a medieval theme look ridiculous and you could tell the staff looked uncomfortable in them. Overall not impressed and certainly not worth the money!
Able to wander around the castle and see its different rooms, nice breakfast and cosy dinner in the Black Knight restaurant
Pricey drinks at the bar
