Hexham, a market town with bustling streets, a decent selection of shops, and an intriguing abbey with paintings from the 15th century and a beautiful Saxon crypt, is ten miles away. Around a one-hour journey will bring you to the Gateshead Metro Centre, one of the biggest shopping malls in Europe, as well as the Border Country, Northumbrian shoreline, Kielder Forest with cycling and watersports, Beamish Open Air Museum, and Durham Cathedral.
