If you are going for a pilgrimage then Madurai is the right place to go. I will vouch for the tagline, "Temple City", is appropriate but if you want to enjoy otherwise then other attractions are limited.

Very busy around Minakshi temple.
Very busy around Minakshi temple. We visited during late March 2024 and day time temperatures were around 35°-39° C , the Thirumalai Nayak Palace was going through massive renovation and so 75% of the area was not accessible. Ghandhi Memorial was also being renovated. So was the area near Vandiyur lake and gardens, So in 2024 avoid these places.

I booked 5 nights but 3 was enough to visit local sights.
I booked 5 nights but 3 was enough to visit local sights. I stayed at a hotel walking distance from the station and it also proved walking distance from the meenakshi temple (west gate). Check out the Jain temple on the approach to the west gate. I’d recommend taking socks for the temple visit as shoes are not allowed and the stone floors can get quite hot. Highly recommend touring the outside of the temple for great photos as not cameras are allowed inside, but some shops will allow photos from their rooftops in the hope of a purchase. Beggars are persistent as are street sellers. Thirumalai nayakkar Mahal is well worth a visit - I used google maps to get around and on route to this beautiful building I came across a super shop (AK. Ahamed) for clothes etc - something I would have missed had I taken a ride. I found clothes, food and local travel cheaper than many other cities. I viewed other recommendations for places to eat but I did find it difficult to get the message across about “non-spicy” as it seems many of the sauces come pre-prepped.

Disappointed by our time here: temples are great, but Madurai let down in comparison to other cities in Tamil Nadu by dirty streets and poor roads, overly greedy auto drivers (again far worse than in other Indian cities!). Would not choose to visit again

If you are a person with faith , must visit place only for temple . City like many other cities in India are chaotic and disorderly. Not a customer service oriented atmosphere . Stick with the objective of faith relevant places , don't let people behavior concern you too much .

Maduraï is a big, busy, noisy, polluted city, as it is I guess, everywhere in India, now that people can afford motorbikes and cars.
But the Temple and the Palace too, are worth seing, and, moroever, they are quiet places. I would advise to find a good hotel a bit off town, to rest peacefully.
The great place to stay if you want to have a luxury experience which costs as the same the 5 star hotels around Madurai. A serene property almost in the midst of Madurai. The property is covered with beautiful trees, plants and flowers. One could just take a stroll around the property to have a relaxing experience. The only downside the breakfast spread focuses more on the Indian varieties even though most of the guests staying over there are foreigners.
Good location
Courteous staff
Excellent food
Reasonable room price
The owner is ready to help you to make your trip a pleasant one.
He even advised me on my local sightseeing trip and arranged a very good driver. Overall I would rate my stay in Madurai to 5 stars.
What else you need in a new place when on a liesure trip
Thank you Booking.com for suggesting me the B G RESIDENCY MADURAI.

and delicious Indian food, may be one of the best that I ever tried.
rich assortment of food for a breakfast , lunch and dinner .
and shef Mohamed always personally coming and asking for any requests or suggestions
it’s so nice
so have a great experience with food and staying in Courtyard by Marriott Madurai
for sure will come back again
The property is a green oasis in Madurai, it transforms you into a world of natural beauty and serenity. Beautiful old trees, lovely pathways, very friendly and helpful smiling staff. Excellent facilities with a lovely pool, well equipped gym, a spa. Ours was a spacious place with a plunge pool in our room. Food quality is excellent.
Following leaving another hotel within Madurai due to bad cleanliness- Moshi’s Nest couldn’t have been better. A fabulously clean new, modern room, with comfy double bed, excellent air con and fan, and a shower that surpasses any in India to date- with strong power and hot water.
A brilliant stay!
The hotel is unlike any other. It is a fine blend of nature and good facilities. My family liked it very much. The peacocks, trees, well maintained garden and spacious rooms were the highlights. Staff led by Mr. Siddharth was extremely courteous and helpful. Definitely a great choice at Madurai.
We loved our stay at Amika hotel. The staff were really friendly. The property is value for money, very neat. It's also close by to all the major landmarks. The restaurant has a yummy menu. We especially liked the breakfast buffet. Highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Madurai.
This is a well-managed, budget-friendly hotel. The rooms are clean and secure. The staff is helpful and kind. The hotel is a 10-minute drive from the Meenakshi complex. The surrounding area is easy to navigate on foot and includes a grocery store, cafes, and restaurants.
Hotel is located near to Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple. Surrounded with shops and eateries. All Rooms are located in just 1 floor. Spacious, clean and good ventilation. Its worth the price we paid. Check in and out was flawless. Will definitely return.
Staff and service was great. A typical Taj quality assurance.
Location of the resort and the view is just beautiful. If you visit Madurai, you should visit The Gateway Hotel Pasumalai atleast once. It's an amazing place.
The only Good thing About this hotel is that it is in a great location (next to the west entrance of the Meenakshi Temple) most major attractions in madurai is in walkable distance only including the railway station.
Nothing to like here. It’s more of a very cheap lodge and not a hotel. No facilities like clean water as well. It’s not close to the Meenakshi temple as mentioned on the booking site, it’s actually quite far
Excellent hotel - excellent rooms - excellent food and amenities - great staff ( Madan, Dinesh, Sakti, Meenakshi) - would love to stay again when am back in madurai
All the staffs were awesome and property Manager Naveen was very good. He also suggested us to stay at Hycinth hotels in Trivandrum which was also excellent hotel.
