Our hosts, family and staff all went the extra mile to ensure that our stay was to be a memorable one. The information and places of interest that were suggested by Jose upon our arrival were most helpful as was the local restaurant they booked for dinner. Not only was our accommodation superb so was the whole ambiance that they had created at Casas do Rio with the gardens, shrubs and trees. Breakfast was fantastic with most of it being produced with a blend of homemade and local produce-------------yogurt and chestnut cake to die for. Thank you for a wonderful time and my wife and I can't wait to return.
There was nothing to fault and everything to praise.
We stayed at Casas do Rio in early October. We stayed for one night (we were walking the Camino) but wished we could have stayed longer. We arrived tire and were offered fresh fruit juice and a piece of cake before checking in. The owner’s daughter and Thelma were gracious and kind, even offering to wash our clothes (and if you have ever walked a Camino, you know how exciting that is!). Their pride in the property and willingness to share the property’s history was The grounds were beautiful: green grass, fruit trees, swans, a pool, Jacuzzi and sauna. Breakfast was a large buffet of delectable treats – homemade breads, coffee cakes, meats and cheeses – it was difficult to break away and start back on our walk. The owners also arranged for a local restaurant to pick up those of us who had walked on the Camino into town for dinner. Truly a wonderful place to stay – only wish that we could have stayed longer!
Christina and Jose and their family and staff were the perfect hosts. Every effort was made to ensure we enjoyed our stay. A lovely house and grounds all beautifully restored. Excellent breakfast.
My wife and I spent three wonderful nights with Jose and his family at Casas do Rio. We were graciously met at the train station by Jose Jr., And taken on a tour of their home and grounds by both him and his sister Filipa. After the tour, these two delightful young hosts offered us fresh home-baked treats and fresh juice from their orchards. What a pleasure it was to sit and talk with Jose Jr. And Filipa, and learn more about the history of their family home and the nearby village of Barcelos. This unique experience extended to the next morrning when we awoke to a generous selection of breakfast items, including traditional Portuguese tarts and fresh homemade yogurt. This extensive buffet was presented to us with evident pride by Jose Jr. The rooms were spotlessly clean and well-maintained within an historic building. Jose, Cristina, and the family went out of their way to ensure that our experience in their home was memorable. And, indeed it was!! Your new Canadian friends.... Ian & Jennifer
A small piece of heaven on earth. Beautiful setting, immaculate gardens, lovely swimming pool, jacuzzi and sauna Small, but well equipped rooms. Breakfast a feast of homemade produce. Jose, his lovely family and staff were wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble. We thoughly enjoyed our stay, wish it could have been longer.
A minor point but we found the beds very hard.
José the owner passion and friendly great and very personal breakfasts fruits trees park excellent fruits you can eat swimming pool spa every thing gorgeous
Unbelievable, with how much love & detail this place is ran & taken care of. We made the mistake of staying only 2 nights here & 4 more in 2 other hotels in the north of Portugal. From this place you could see all the highlights. The breakfast is outstanding. There is enough space for privacy ( huge garden) & fun ( pool billard, ball games, movie theather, swimming pool etc.). Nearby are nice authentic restaurants with traditional cooking.
Luxurious setting. Amenities and facilities were excellent although for some reason I couldn't get the wifi to work. Breakfast was fab and they suggested we take some extras for our Camino walk. Señor Eduardo came to collect us to eat dinner at his restaurant and was kindness personified.
We had to leave after only staying for one night - you will want to stay longer. And unfortunately we didn't have the opportunity to eat dinner here. Maybe next time.
Hello Christine, Jose and service team, many thanks for the terrific stay and warm hospitality. " Casas Do Rio " was as a starting point optimal for our excursions to Braga, Porto, Geres, Guimaraes, Barcelos and to the coastal places. The delicious home-made juices at the breakfast will remain in memory. The helpful suggestions of Jose were very pleasant. Please change nothing! We will see each other again:-) Dunja and Robert
We stayed for three wonderful days and did not want to leave! Our hosts - Jose and Christina (and their staff) could not be more hospitable; kind and helpful. Our room was beyond beautiful. The surrounds and facilities 5-star but with a feeling of being comfortable; welcome and relaxed. We had access to all the amenities one could wish for and a movie theatre - what a bonus. The breakfast offered was prepared with such care and thought - when last have you eaten jam/chutneys from fruit trees on the property? Bread baked in a wood-fired oven? Delicious. When we arrived we needed assistance with a tyre blow-out - we asked Jose if he could recommend where we could have it repaired - one phone call and an hour later the job was done!
We've stayed for a very short period and had not time to enjoy properly this lovely place and the great hospitality of the hosts. Their love and dedication to this place, can be noticed in every detail: the rooms, the outside spaces, the fantastic breakfast, are only some of the examples. really good!
The effort and attention the owners put into this place is way out there. Very calming atmosphere. We were walking the camino Portugues and wished we could have stayed an extra day there. This is indeed an exceptional place and we recommend it strongly.
Like all hotels we have in encountered in Portugal the beds are relatively short and hard. The room could have been warmer
amazing property, staff excellent, service , allow pets, comfy rooms, heating, pool, breakfast yummy!
it is a bit hard to find, and away from the center town
Pilgrims heaven, with a wonderful whirlpool and espectacular breakfast buffet
Beautiful quiet and secluded premises with a surprising variety of fruit trees! Cristina and Luis are exceptional guests, Breakfast is abundant , with special care to healthy and homemade cakes, jams fruit juices etc. The rooms are splendid with a great respect to origins of the building! More than a 10!
Comfortable rooms Amazing breakfast Fantastic hosts Lots of information and tips
Stay too short
Jose and Christina make excellent hosts, and their staff are very helpful. The grounds are large so it is a lovely peaceful place. Would also be a great place for families. Restaurants are at least a kilometre a way so if you don't have a car you'll need to taxi it...but that can easily be organised. Anyway, you wont need dinner after eating the fantastic breakfast.
The bed was little hard for our getting older bodies.
Everything, couldn't be better!
Friendly staff Home made breakfast Great territory with swans Perfect place for relax for couple days Game room
Restaurants are far away
Casas dos Rio was the first place we stayed at after arriving in Portugal , and it proved well nigh impossible to beat. The room was easily the most luxurious and best equipped. On arrival we were treated to some delicious home-made cake and fresh juice, and breakfast was a real feast. Moreover, the owner couldn't have been more helpful with plenty of tips of what to visit nearby and how to continue our journey. Facilities like a fair-sized pool ,a games room and a lovely garden make it ideal for a longer stay. In all - highly recommended !.
