Good location but tired old hotel

Place was very tired. Hallways smelt a bit moldy. Our room looked like it was decorated in the 80's. The shower had stained grouting. The mattress was not comfortable, I'm guessing v. old. The place needs some TLC

Location was perfect for us and the off street parking was good. The room (70) had an excellent view of the distant hills

The whole place has a run down air. Whilst the basic provision was OK, the atmosphere of neglect put a damper on the stay.

Continental breakfast - can't go wrong. Location excellent, which is why we chose it in the first place. The building itself had historic interest.

Unfortunately the hotel is in decline and is starting to look run down. The room was not particularly clean and one of the two towels provided was stained. As much as the staff were great - I can’t recommend staying here when the Premier Inn and other options are available at a similar price.

The staff were very friendly and helpful.

The sad thing is that it really needs in my opinion a major injection of cash to bring it up to standard. The central heating had broken down . One of the rooms had an electrical fault requiring a move to another room . One has to except that a 600 year old hotel would look out of place with level floors and modern furniture . but the three rooms I saw could be improved with a major spring clean and attention to small things like grouting and paint finishes which wouldn't cost that much also checking that equipment works and possibly get rid of baths and replace with good showers

this Hotel is in the centre of Lewes and has good parking availability. It is a very old Hotel and is Grade two listed I was expecting Quirky which it certainly is it also has a swimming pool which I didn't have time to try but looked nice The continental breakfast was good and the staff on duty were helpful although I suspect they could do with more staff .

We had not have hot water in the shower. The shower looked very old and neglected with mouldy bits. With some very cost effective ways it could look a lot better. The man at reception was very unfriendly and unsmiling

We liked the building, the fireplace in the lounge, and the furniture in our bedroom.

radiator didn’t work and it was single glazing windows, this meant it was freezing with the thin duvet overnight. bathroom was quite dirty and needed a very good clean! despite there being 2 TV’s in the bedroom, neither worked. the one which turned on came with a message “check antenna”, obviously I couldn’t do this and there was no internal phone to ring reception, as it was 10.30pm I didn’t go down and the TV still didn’t work in the morning.

    okay value for money

No hot food only continental breakfast which was ok, but unable to get a meal in the evening. Equipment in gym very poor some barely working at all. Also bar not staffed if you wanted a drink presume you had to ask poor guy at reception desk, same for coffee bar so we didn't bother. Room a bit tired, especially bathroom. Have stayed here a couple of times before and were disappointed how much it has gone down in quality.

Location and view from room were good. What few staff we saw were very nice. Free parking.

The layout of the room really didn’t work - you couldn’t watch the TV from where it was fastened onto the wall - the beam required gymnastics abilities to get to the bath room - in the dark the room was a dangerous assault course No hairdryer one chair in a double room - the decor was very tired and shabby - the kettle was grubby

We were told on arrival that breakfast was just continental as they didn’t have a cook - so we didn’t have breakfast - the lady in reception on our final Morning was wonderful and nothing was too much trouble - wish she had been there when we arrived !

Bathroom could have done with a shelf or similar for arranging toiletries etc. Unfortunately my overall happy experience was spoilt on Sunday night when I arrived back at the hotel at 9.50 pm to find everything locked up and a notice advising me to ring a certain number. I had previously on check-in been advised that the hotel was open till 10.30/ 11. I am one of those eccentrics who choose not to use a mobile phone but fortunately I was able to hail a couple of lads passing (Swiss tourists as it turned out) who rang the number for me and I was admitted by a gentleman who told me that I should have been informed of the earlier closing time. I had not been so informed. He apologised but hardly profusely!

Very friendly reception on arrival and the lady who booked me in also carried my bag up to my room. A very good continental breakfast was included in the price and set me up for the day. a nice compact bedroom with beams and en suite facilities

The hotel looks uncared for and parts of it were actually dirty. Whilst the pool itself appeared clean, the surroundings were shabby and the showers were out of use. Our room was not serviced during our stay so we had to go to reception for anything we needed topping up, which we were not told at check-in. Clean towels seemed to be in short supply and were of a very poor standard, some actually unusable. This lovely old building deserves better.

The location is convenient is central and close to all amenities. Free car parking is useful. Reception staff tried hard to be helpful.

The hotel could be great but it is in dire need of updating and upgrading on all levels. Fantastic location with parking and a beautiful historic building. It needs a lot of money invested. Plumbing, interiors, windows. Tech facilities etc…. Hoping someone will invest it deserves a chance.

Bed sagged. Pillows under the clean pillow slips were stained and the duvet in the clean cover was fray and discoloured. Economising on lights in a large rambling building gives a rather sad and abandoned feel especially when that includes the areas you walk through to get to the pool and the virtually unlit changing area where the showers and loos were unavailable.

Great central location really convenient for public transport and restaurants. Quirky building with interesting history, lovely helpful staff. Breakfast okay. Great pool
