A colourful, interesting city/large town with interesting...

A colourful, interesting city/large town with interesting shops and restaurants with innovative cuisine. Lovely unspoilt streets with brightly painted buildings, and a lot of interesting original architecture. Plenty of culture (churches, museums) coupled with a contemporary individual vibe. Visit the markets for a real picture of everyday life. And we were very pleased that we made the effort to get to Mount Alban. Our visit was slightly disrupted by encampment of protestors occupying the centre of the city making getting around there a bit difficult and getting to/from the airport. But that was just when we were there May 2026

We stayed at a the Huayapam Yuu Lodge on the edge of the...

We stayed at a the Huayapam Yuu Lodge on the edge of the village, exceptional. An extraodinary setting with mountain views, gracious and helpful hosts, a real sense of tradition and authenticity, wonderful food, plants, hummingbirds -- it was a restful retreat and jumping off place for many fantastic day trips in the region, and just a taxi ride away to Oaxaca city. In future we'd like to explore the eco-park near town and eat at the XHEN Cocina de Humo Contemporánea‎ restaurant, as well as take more time to explore the town and maybe catch the Easter procession (we heard plenty of practice fireworks and music in the distance). The Lodge was amazing!

Very walkable city. Nice people and safe.

Very walkable city. Nice people and safe. Definitely helpful to speak some Spanish as there isn't an abundance of English spoken. Lots of hidden gem stores and restaurants but they can be hard to find as the entrances are very inconspicuous.

It was quiet and there were many sitting areas on the...

It was quiet and there were many sitting areas on the grounds / pool area. I could easily walk around the village without having to rent a taxi though they certainly would have called me for one. The room was beautiful. I was there for a week while taking Spanish classes in the nearby school.

It was a great experience.

It was a great experience. Oaxaca City is a wonderful place to visit. Lots to see and do. We ate at nearby restaurants although the hotel restaurant was quite good too. We had a local tour guide Raul Felix who was great!
