The only half-day hike that takes you to overlook the Sai Kung Bay and it’s outlying islands from a plateau 400 meters above sea level. The hike starts at Ma On Shan Village, the site of the once biggest mine in Hong Kong. The mine closed in 1976 after 70 years of Iron mining. Most of the villagers have left the mountain, but some houses are still inhabited. The romantic nature trail leads uphill through forest to Ngong Ping Plateau. After one hour the mighty Ma On Shan to the left and Pyramid Hill up front. The views from the edge of the plateau over Sai Kung and the many Islands are breathtaking. This is a favorite starting and landing arena for hang gliders. Standing up here however provides areal views for those of us who aren’t flying too!
