It was the monks of the Jerónimos Monastery, right next door, who invented this cake that is now so famous and appreciated all over the world.
It was from Belém that Vasco da Gama set out to discover the sea route to India. Today, the district has many attractions, including the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower and also the Marco dos Descobrimentos, which celebrates the glory of Portugal's naval expansion - these monuments are not to be missed!
