Los Yamanas, Los Acebos Ushuaia Hotel, and Bagu Ushuaia Hotel got great room view-related reviews from travelers in Ushuaia.
Shops were what one would expect from a tourist area. There were a couple of nice made in Argentina/Ushuaia shops. Streets are one way in downtown and this is good. There are very few stop lights which for us was weird. Keep your eyes open. Streets and side walks are in need of repair so watch your steps. Coffee is great and desserts too good. There is a family pizza place, El Turko that has some of the best food and is not on the usual list of tourist dining. English language is minimal at this establishment but don't let that stop you. They open late. There are hills but downtown is not too bad.
As a departure point for our voyage to Antarctica, Ushuaia was interesting. It is quite a mix...it is now cruise ship shore stop for ships that go from Chile to Argentina or the reverse, as well as serving the Antarctic travelers like us. It is also a working town and port, and so there are a mix of facilities there. One could spend a longer time exploring the Beagle channel and mountains behind the town. It's certainly a novelty as the furthest south biggest city, the End of the World. We did our our passports stamped at the very well run and useful gov't tourist center
We have spent 5 nights in Ushuaia to enjoy the "End of the World" and wait for a cruise to Punta Arenas (via Cape Horn). Unfortunately, that was cancelled as so was the rest of our trip (right at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis). But those days were so great that we felt good about the whole experience. We visited the National Park (Sendero Costera is a must do), hiked to the Laguna Esmeralda (get to know what a "peatbog" is...), hiked to the Martial Glacier, and in the rainy day, visited the Museo Maritimo y del Presidio de Ushuaia. For a meal or dinner (from 9 am to 9pm), look no further than the Ramos Generales. Note that most restaurants open at 8pm and if you are tired from hiking for hours, you don't want to wait that long (forget about going to the hotel to take a shower...). Ushuaia is not a fancy touristic town (you will feel that...) but if you stay a few days, you get used to it. Do not take tours... rent a car and get out of town by yourself. Well worth it!!!
It is a quaint town with a perfect location to kick off a cruise to Antartica. Plenty of restaurants and souvenir shops to fill a day or two. With more time, we understand there are multiple hiking and nature rich locations to enjoy.
Definitely the trip out to see the penguins. Also a few whales and sea lions and loads of birds. Great trip. (I booked with Ushuaia outdoors and they brought the ticket to my apartment, $4100). Also Dublin bar has been the best bar I have been to in the 5 weeks here in Argentina
A frontier town catering for everything you will need. Good selection of bars and restaurants. Plenty of outdoor shops selling all the last minute camping and hiking stuff you forgot to bring. Port of choice for cruises to Antarctica. New airport only 10 minutes from town.
Wow wow and wow for the pool area in the austral winter Having an outdoor swim at -3 surrounded by white peaks and viewing ushuaia from above was dreamy (especially early morning and late night when there was no one) Breakfast was exquisite and the empanadas ...
