How to review a town, with all its rich history? Carnarvon is now a prosperous, bright little town gathered around the Fascine, a seawall at the bottom of the main street where there are palms and pathways looking out over boats and Babbage Island in the distance. I grew up there in the 1970s and visited it in February 2017. Carnarvon is still a friendly everyone-knows-everyone town. It is loved to the point of obsession by those who live there and those who grew up there. I think this is partly because its isolation and closeness to giant nature - cyclones, desert, the Indian Ocean - creates very particular lives and stories. These are not easily accessible to the first-time visitor. Carnarvon is best experienced by going slowly, unhitching yourself from screens and distractions, and finding ways to immerse yourself in the unique natural landscape. That said, you can get great coffee and a gorgeous place to while away time at the Fascine Coffee Lounge!
Expected the agriculture of this area, but unfortunate we were here the wrong time of year ( January) to really enjoy the abundance of their fruit. NASA Tracking Station was a VERY good plus for us, & for a small museum it supplied their important place with tracking Apollo & Gemini spaceships. The Sugar Scoop Antenna is still on the grounds. Recordings from the employees in the Tracking Room, was very interesting. Great for children (but we enjoyed it too,( putting on astronaut suits)) a replica Apollo craft that one can go into, & sit as the astronauts did, with a recording of one of the Apollo take-offs inside the capsule. The two Jetty's were very interesting & are being further renovated, One Mile Jetty which was used to transport cattle & goods to Fremantle. The second Jetty was a tramway, where one can see the old tram station, & there is a trail to the One MIle Jetty. We enjoyed Carnavon, primarily because of its history.
As we only stayed one night we didn't have time to take in the sights, but looking at all the signs pointing to sights to see and talking with the Motel staff at night you could easily spent a couple of days here.
