This is a great little country town. I can highly recommend the Royal Hotel. Fresh from refurbishment it’s a great place to relax eat great pub food. Jo Jo’s cafe great with exceptional coffee and breakfast. The fortune Chinese food was sensational. In each of these venues we were a large group and they handled large orders with charm and excellent service.
We did the drive from Guyra to Ebor Falls and back along the Waterfall way to Armidale then back to Guyra. The only falls flowing were Ebor Falls but the other gorges are truly worth seeing. A visit to Hillgrove is a must with the museum being a highlight. The national parks in the area with amazing lookouts are also well worth a visit.
Pretty area, rural town with wildlife areas and cafes. The Mother of Ducks wildlife reserve is a highlight. Getting around is easy, it’s mostly all on one street. We were told the Bowling Club bistro served good food, so we must have got them on a bad night, although they did manage to create a vegetarian meal as there weren’t any on the menu. The Bowling Club itself however was wonderful- very nice artificial green and lovely bowlers who were very helpful getting a visitor set up.
The lamb and potato festival was on - it has grown enormously since our first visit about thirty years ago, with market stalls all along the main road near the motel. Guyra has the highest commercial airport in Australia, and a big industry of tomatoes grown hydroponically, which keeps the town alive.
We were there for family reasons. Would have liked more time to catch up with more old acquaintances. Got caught though as the weather changed dramatically and we were only took clothes for one night. We visited the bowls club. Lovely food and atmosphere. Checked out the shops in the Main Street. Easy town to get around and everything within walking distance if you want.
