The Bruny Island ferry operates out of Kettering so all visitors to Bruny must pass through Kettering but many do not take time to stay in Kettering which has so much to offer and provides a gateway to the Huon River, Cygnet and various places of interest. The Peppermint Bay Hotel offers great food and outlook acoss the channel while the Oyster Cove hotel is also worth a visit. Many tourists are unaware of Oyster Cove as the last settlement of Tasmania's small indigenous population who had been held at Wybelenna on Flinders Island. Trucaninni and King Billy Lanne were two of the 44 people moved to Oyster Cove around 1847. Trucannin was born on Bruny Island and her ashes were scattered in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel 100 years after her death in 1876.
1 day on Bruny Island is not enough. Must do the boat tour and drop into the winery for their seafood (brunch of Oysters and mussels. Missed out on the oyster shack (not enough time), but the oysters at the winery were good). Leaving the island at the end of the day - expect to catch the 2nd or 3rd at the end of the day, but there are 2 running every half hour.
Oyster Cove Chalets are superb! Annie and Guy present their apartments stylishly with great attention to detail. Local wildlife visits to share apples. The serenity of this location is extreme. Wonderful!
Kettering is the perfect gateway to Bruny Island with the Ferry Terminal and Oyster Inn Hotel the main drawcords. There are a number of tranquil B&B's around the town that is only 30 minutes south of Hobart.
Kettering is a great vantage point to access Bruny Island for a day trip. The pub has great views and the Tassie scallops there were delicious. We also took take away from Pasha's restaurant back to our accommodation for dinner twice!
Very poor at holiday time. There was no food available for dinner at Kettering on a Sunday evening (it was not even a public holiday) this is not what is needed by tourists staying in a B&B. There needs to a coordinated approach to ensure that some food is available every night. Central location for ferry to Bruny Island.
