I really rate Launceston, especially Cataract Gorge, City Park, Riverbend Park, QV Museum, the old city charm and many fabulous places to eat. It is compact, comparatively affordable and easy to get around.

Launceston is a fascinating city located amidst three rivers...

Launceston is a fascinating city located amidst three rivers. The city has some terrific architecture from earlier times. Climbing up and around Cataract Gorge is an invigorating experience, as is taking a boat trip on the Tamar and South Elk rivers. The city's pace is relatively relaxed and night-life is limited, as is cultural activity. Launceston does have aspirations to grow in this regard, and will surely do so. Be sure to pronounce the city Lon-Ses-Tin, with the opening syllable emphasised and said quickly. Locals are friendly to 'mainlanders' but consciousness of our 'otherness'. Check out the levee built to keep the water out when there's flooding. Part of the city's edge lies in the abiding possibility of sizeable washouts. They look like they it sorted ... hopefully. Rupert and Hound is a well-positioned restaurant well worth a visit.

I have been visiting Launceston for over 40 years and love the place. If I had the opportunity I would live here. Check out the Queen Victoria Museum (free entry) and Cataract Gorge a leisurely stroll from the city centre to the tea gardens and lyrebirds, very relaxing. Unfortunately on this occasion I was only there for 1 day

Being a historic city, there are beautiful, old buildings everywhere. The CBD is compact with beautiful architecture everywhere you look. With the rivers and hills it’s a very scenic place. As a solo traveller I enjoyed the City Park and the monkeys, the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, the Timber Museum of Tasmania, cruise up the gorge and then walking the gorge trail. It’s a very walkable place. The locals are friendly and there is a layback vibe. I would love to return some day.

The hotel is in a strategic location. It’s clean, and the staff are super friendly and helpful. The staff are so helpful to the point that they have prepared a map and a list of restaurants you can go to according to different cuisine. Do you want to try. It’s literally in the city of Launceston and you can go to the chemists, the convenience stores, the supermarkets.
