Living in WA I always love returning to Margaret River to recharge the batteries. Margaret River offers a beautiful country feeling with tall trees, scenic drives and pristine beaches. It caters so well for tourists and also provides a huge variety of food options from gourmet to eat on the go! The wineries not only provide great service and wine but are worth a visit to see magnificent gardens. This region is perfect for all travellers, as it caters for everyone. The main attractions are free - the beautiful coastline and scenic tree drive along Caves Rd. Many other hidden gems can be found when you literally get lost for the day in the area! It's a maze of natural scenery with touristy things to do scattered about. The trick is to remember where they all are. So make sure you are laden with maps. Around every corner springs a lovely surprise - a winery, cheese factory, a cave to explore or even chocolate factory are just a few to look out for. A must for any overseas traveller as we WA people already know it's just one of our areas in paradise. Oops I nearly forgot to mention the art galleries - showcasing our Aussie artists. I love them! Some of the wineries display artwork too. It's worth popping into the information centre first to plan your itinerary if your time is limited as there is so much to do and see in this region.
Fabulous place. The local people were so lovely and helpful. We of course toured the wineries,( have three boxes being shipped back) local produce was so flavoursome. Great cheeses and the chocolate was yum! Sightseeing was beautiful,. Many things to see and not overly expensive. We live near the beach on the east coast but the beaches there are amazing. Whitest sand and clear water. Lots of hidden surprises, like liquor chocolate and the best little Italian winery,- Carpe Diem vineyard. (. A box from there and probably more to come ) If your a seafood lover, try the marron, a crayfish that is like a cross between lobster, crab and prawn- yum!! Katich -up in Margaret river is great. Another lovely restaurant is " howling wolves" in Rivendell. You will find little delights in lots of places.
The natural beauty of the area was outstanding. Great wineries with great settings especially the gardens of Vasse Felix and Vouager Estate. Lots of places to eat but beware the early closure of restaurants as kitchens closed around 9-9.30pm. Try Cape Lodge in Yallingup, 28km from Margaret River town, beautiful restaurant and lodge. Lovely independent shops and boutiques. Easy to get around with a car. Taxis would be expensive, but it's expensive anywhere in Australia! We went on a fabulous small group tour of just 6 pp with Sean of Margaret River Discovery Tour. Highly recommended.
There is a fairily new winery called Brygon Reserve, just north of town, that has amazingly good wines throughout their range. They are winning lots of awards and getting wonderful reviews in wine magazines, etc., so Brygon is definitely a place to visit for a tasting if you are into that sort of thing. Pete, the current representative on the cellar door, could not be nicer; and needless to say, he is both knowledgable and (understandably) enthusiastic about their wines. The tastings are free, too, I should say; whereas at the more thoroughly established, now quite pretentious places, such as Leeuwin Estate, tastings are pricey. If you want their Platinum cellar door experience, for example, you pay Au$ 290. Ooh La La. Not sure what the minimum price is there--$25? Still. . . .
Gnarabup Beach Ria Mexican always great food and good fun with friendliest of service Brewhouse fabulous new place on edge of town-parking a bit tricky Sidekick coffee to die for and the healthy Earth muffins are a treat Blue Ginger does a great brekky The Bakery's Kermit smoothie perks you up Don't miss the Farmers Market for awesome produce Stopped in at cowaramup Brewery on the way for a yummy lunch- catch up with the gaggle of geese again!
Our favourite day was driving south along cave road and stopping at Hamelin bay to paddle with the large sting rays that come right up to you! The lighthouses were also a highlight, with nice walks and views. There are also lots of beautiful beaches, with white sand and turquoise seas, and mostly were almost deserted. I think the excellence of the many many wineries goes without saying!
We absolutely loved staying here for 2 nights and I think my little boy (aged 3) would like to live here! Fabulous setting, spacious, clean accommodation with great facilities and the farm activities through the day are brilliant which are all included in the stay. In addition, overnight guests get a free pony ride in the morning (for ages 2-6) and a tractor ride. DVDs can be rented from the office for free too which is great as there is a TV and DVD player in the accommodation.
This was a perfect holiday for our family. Our children were so happy to roam free around the farm with the animals. The manager Kim was so friendly, welcoming and so wonderful with our children. Farmer John was a star, so patient, kind and really took his time to involve the children in the animal feed.
Everything was sooooo perfect! Well located, clean and extremely well equipped. Everything to your disposition for your first breakfast, what a treat! We saw plenty of parrots and kangaroos dawns and at dusk! We stayed 3 nights but wished we had stayed longer! Merci beaucoup!
