Capital of the Alagoas state, it owes its name to the word the natives used to call the natural springs that form lagoons in the area. Founded in the 19th century around sugar mills and sugar plantations, it became an important trading port for primary products. It was officially recognised as a village in 1815, and it was declared state capital of Alagoas in 1839.
