CanadaMartin & Angelika’s home is the perfect getaway. The downstairs suite is cozy and has everything you could need. We stayed for two nights to explore Stewart and Hyder and wish we had stayed longer. We especially enjoyed riding the bicycles Martin & Angelika have for guests to use, we rode around town and the boardwalk. We plan to come back to Stewart late September in order to see the Salmon Glacier, and will definitely stay in the Guesthouse Austria again.

bummer that wildlife viewing center was closed because of...
bummer that wildlife viewing center was closed because of Glacier flood damage, and the seafood shack in Hyder was closed as well because a new fryer was on order so those 2 things were disappointments but we saw several bears and eagles which made the detour to the area worthwhile and a spectacular drive in sunny weather.

The drive up to Salmon Glacier was well worth the bumpy gravel road. Much more impressive than I thought it would be.
I was greatly disappointed that the bear observation site was not open but seeing the devastation the flood caused it is very understandable why it is closed. I hope they are able to reopen it again but it will take a long time to rebuild.

Loved the little town. People appeared friendly enough.
Loved the little town. People appeared friendly enough. Did miss the Glacier visit due to road closure, and therefore look forward to coming back. The ToastWorks Restaurant and The Tostada cafe are excellent businesses bringing people together and enabling meeting among the visitors. Loved the music and the food.

Such a lovely, remote town.
Such a lovely, remote town. Definitely not for everybody as there isn't a ton going on here, but the scenery is absolutely stunning and the town definitely has a certain charm about it. The Mexican restaurant (El Tostador aka Toast Works) slash Toaster museum (!!) was such a lovely surprise. We would have liked to stay for a couple more days to hike in the area, ride bikes around, and if the timing was right... check out the salmon run in neighbouring Hyder, Alaska. We will be back!

Stewart and Hyder are a fantastically beautiful area.
Stewart and Hyder are a fantastically beautiful area. The access road (Hwy 37A) offers amazing scenery on a reasonably clear day.
The dirt/gravel road to the glacier out of Hyder is a fun ride on a motorcycle, though it can be done in a car at a much slower pace, and is well worth it.
I didn't see any bear in the nearby area.
The Stewart/Hyder segment was a highlight of my trip to AK, YT, and BC.

Stewart/ Hyder is a great two-day, two-night stay for...
Stewart/ Hyder is a great two-day, two-night stay for outdoorsy people. There's not much to do in Stewart, but certainly a meal at Tostador's is the highlight. Walking to downtown and around is easy, and there are just enough places to eat, shop (one supermarket and a provision shop) and buy booze (several in fact) to keep you supplied.
People come to Stewart to either cross into the U.S. and sister city Hyder to see bears eat salmon at Fish Creek, or drive to the Salmon glacier, or hike in the wilderness. It's also possible to climb or spend time on the water (the Portland Canal is actually a saltwater fjord with decent fishing).
