Bilbao is all about the Guggenheim as far as I am concerned.
Bilbao is all about the Guggenheim as far as I am concerned. The “old town” is grubby and a far cry from the old town and beautiful streets of San Sebastián. Definitely come for the Guggenheim - it is totally worth it - but I’d only stay in Bilbao long enough to see the museum.

Bilbao is a beautiful city that is very real and industrial with a rich history. We rode rental bikes along the river. The ladies got pedicures. We ate a lot of pinchos and enjoyed the wine. We took day trips to nearby beaches and toured the Guggenheim, which we thoroughly enjoyed!

We studied in advance information from Bilbao Tourismo and picked from there some 'Must Do' things like attractions, interesting places to visit and best beaches. Then we made a plan, rented a car for seven days and enjoyed the Bizkaia coast!
The city itself offered a lot of things to do and see. Our favorites were the food hall, the small shops in the old town, the botanical garden, the opera (we saw the Fantasma De La Opera), the friendly people and as the 'sugar on the bottom' the amazing Guggenheim!
Eating was its own experience. Whether it was fast food or a restaurant, we were never disappointed! Basque cuisine is absolutely excellent.

Interesting, beautiful old buildings looked fully restored and cleaned up.
Good public transportation.
Surprising number of people spoke English when I had a bit of difficulty explaining with my imperfect Espanol.
Residents or other people were very nice and friendly.
Shocked at the number of retail stores in all the well trafficed main streets, many of which either were the same as in the USA or very similar.!
Had a long walk, for an older person, from the closest bus to my accommodation in Casco Antigua, the old town section, and strained my back such that my next 3 days were painful. When I took a taxi, instead of walking, to return to airport, taxi was very expensive for short distance to the bus stop.

Bilbao is always worth a visit, even if it is only for its food -particularly food related. But of course, also its history. And how it has reinvented itself! Worth a walk along the cost line and on the old town.
We stayed at the Carlton for one night at the start and one night at the end of our holiday and we loved it both times. The hotel has a delightful, comfortable ambience and the staff were all terrific, helpful, humorous and professional. It is in a great location, within easy walking distance to the old town, the cathedral and the Guggenheim, amongst other places of interest, with plenty of restaurants and shopping possibilities all around. We will definitely stay again when next in Bilbao.
Location of the hotel is amazing, it is in middle of the old town and there are so many things around.
The room was very comfy, bed was huge, and we loved the bathroom.
We enjoyed breakfast, food was tasty and fresh.
Best thing was the staff, they were so accommodating and friendly!
We came to the city at 7 am, and they took our luggage to hold, and called us as soon as there was a room ready, hours before check in time!!
If you visit Bilbao, this is the place to stay.
Nice lobby area with lovely views and plenty of room. Booked a deluxe room and I was disappointed in the quality of the room. Lots of dirty marks/stains on the laminate flooring and overall way too much laminate furniture/fittings didn’t give a luxury feeling. Bathroom was nice and of good quality. Deposit for pool towels is a bit low market for a 4 star hotel these days. Good location and easy down hill walk to the old town of Bilbao which is fabulous.
The room was comfortable and clean. We really enjoyed the view of the old town. I was a walking distance to bars and restaurants. The employees of the hotel were very friendly and helpful. If next time in Bilbao I will consider making reservation reservation again in Hotel Bilbi.
