The Knights Templar castle is fascinating with extensive exhibits (a few have English translation, but more would have been helpful. There may audio guide which I could have missed). The old city is fun to walk, and the new city, an easy stroll across one of two bridges for banking and shopping.
Ancient Knights Templar castle, beautiful and storied old church, a couple of great plaza areas with cafes in which to sip a cafe con leche and watch the world go by, a constant parade of perigrinos passing by on their historic pilgrimage to Santiago. All this and some great restaurants too!
The city main highlight is the templar castle. It deserves a 3 hour visit. Worths the price of the ticket (6 eur). The rest of the ancient centre is also marvellous. But beware the sun heat in august, just terrible! :)
Castle was interesting but they weren't handing out hand sets that explain the various displays most of which were in Spanish only. It appears they used to have audio assist handsets as the various stops. Most castle exhibits showed where you were and which number to press to use a audio handset, so it turned out to be a bit disappointing they weren't being used.
Rooms look aged. Beds were uncomfortable. Free Parking was a bonus. Very poor breakfast. All that could have been bearable if not for the worse: we were encouraged to try up the local menu at their restaurant at our arrival, we proceeded immediately but the cook refused to prepare a meal for us as it was 30 or 15 minutes before her break! No food available in such big hotel! No apology was offered or options given. I will not recommend this place.
A great stopover when visiting the area, Camino de Compostela, the Templars castle etc. Very lively old town with many bars end restaurants. One needs to go and visit Peñalba and some of the other delightful villages in the mountains as well as Las Medulas.

The property was new and looks like a hotel. When I walked in I had to check that I was in a hostel. The rooms were arranged in suites and each suite has shower, toilet, and lockers. The suites are a good size and the bunks were thoughtfully arranged and not too crammed together.

Hostel Rio Selma made for a very restful break for my family while hiking El Camino de Santiago. This large-scale hotel is right on the Camino and only a short walk from other downtown Ponferrada attractions. Some Spanish required to communicate with the staff.

The apartment was amazing! Super clean, super stylish, light and spacious. A terrace with a view to the church square and the mountains was the main spot to chill, read and catch sun. Would gladly come back to Ponferrada just to stay here one more time.

It was clean and a good place for us to stay before walking the Camino Francés. We started in Ponferrada. Restaurants we're close by. They contacted me when we had a miscommunication with my final payment. They were kind and understanding!
