Beautiful (and crowded) castle, possibilities of cruises on the lake and some nice restaurants. Great market in the mornings. A town for a couple of days, not more (unless you are here for the opera festival).
We had a incident there with poorly managed covid restrictions in upscale pizzeria in centrum. They didn't care social distancing and when we went to say about that, local covid denials launch yelling and swearing show. That ruined our evening and somebody might even say that its not worth to go back there. At least to that pizzeria that is.
Savonlinna pleasantly surprised me. It felt like a bigger city and had a lot of good restaurants and shops. Olavinlinna Castle is a must see, and only a short walk from the shore (where you can park). Close by Olavinlinna, you can find shops and restaurants in abundance. We stayed at Casino Spa and for once, there's an effective air conditioning available at a Finnish hotel. Finland as a whole still thinks our summers are not hot enough to warrant AC, but they're slowly but surely getting there.
Visit Olavinlinna is must. I recommend to go to Linnankatu-the old town. People are friendly. Town is very nice place surrounded by water. Also recommend hiking around Olavinlinna, it offer great view of the castle. My visit was followed by rain, that was reason not to go and see seals!!!
We ate a lot of "muikku" served in different ways. Try the soup at the market square "rantakalakeitto". Great! Loved to walk along the shore. Went to Sulosaari, an island behind the casino. Had crepes that tasted great. The castle was nice too. We walked everywhere since it's such a small place. Newly opened "muikkuterassi" at the top floor of the Sokos hotel was great at sunset.
A quiet cozy town with a pleasant quay and a cool playground for kids. The alley for walking with dogs is easy to find. The castle is worth to be visited and the small islands around are also good for walking. But too many tourists and therefore too many restaurants and hotels.
Savonlinna
Spacious and cosy cottages with privacy. You could stay near the lake and feel alone or visit the hotel area and enjoy all type of activities like tennis, volleyball, basketball, frisbee golf, game room, etc. A perfect combination between being in nature but not being alone, particularly important when not familiar with the place and traveling with young kids. Notebooks from more than 15 years of past persons staying at Moki 4.

The grounds, environment, staff and room were all exceptional. It was such a relaxing stay and the ambience can’t be beat. They have rowboats to take on the nearby lake and it’s an amazing little experience.
The hotel staff was very helpful and really nice. The location is good with only two blocks from the summer restaurants and the old castle. Extra plus for the air conditioning and a fridge in every room.
The hotels location is great and the hotel hast a lot of charme. Beds (very comfy) and other furniture are new but kitchen area in the room and bathrooms are older. Great breakfast.
Got to swim at the backside of the hotel in lake Saimaa. The spa was nice. The bar at the pool was a delightful surprise. The staff was very friendly.
The staff was very helpful and super nice. Hotel was clean and very comfortable. The location is superb next to the main market square.
