Hôtel du Centre, Les Chambres de l'Abbaye, and Relais du Bois Saint Georges - Hôtel de Charme got great room view-related reviews from travelers in Saintes.
Nice town with old original part full of character, small enough for easy walking. Large cathedral. Roman amphitheatre. Abbaye aux Dames well worth a visit (or to stay at) Plenty of restaurants to choose from. River charente running through the centre. Easy to access from the motorway.
We were using Saintes to break our journey from channel port to the Pyrenees. Stayed at the Abbaye aux Dames which is lovely in itself, with an audio-guide tour included in the room charge (about 2 hours) and an easy walk to the centre of Saintes which has a Roman triumphal arch and other Roman remains on the riverbank, a cathedral, lots of old narrow streets to explore which are packed with restaurants and bars to suit most budgets. Saintes is small enough to walk around comfortably, many of the central streets are pedestrian only. There is a well preserved Roman Amphitheatre a mile or so away which we visited the next morning before restarting our journey. We stayed there again on the way back and I'm sure will do so again as it is a regular journey for us.
It was easy to explore and find our way to restaurants on the other side of the river from the hotel Les Chambres de l'Abbaye and it is a location that I would like to return to on a future visit.
It is worth a day looking around Saintes. Church, museum and the old town. There are plenty of good value and good places to eat. It is easy to tell when they are full of locals having a good time. We particularly liked La Cave Passe a Table near to the hotel. Great brasserie style food and it is run by a real wine buff.
We booked one night in Saintes as a stopover on our journey home, and I wish we'd stayed another night. It's a warm, welcoming place with interesting architecture. Good restaurants. The arch of Germanicus is worth a look if you're passing, but the amphitheatre is overpriced. If you're in that end of town, the church of St Eutrop is the better visit.
Saintes is a lovely town with great markets, Roman ruins, riverside walks and some good shops and restaurants - one of our favourite stopping places when we visit France. Have always found adequate parking places even in the height of the tourist season - good stopping off point if travelling further South or returning North.
The hotel is centrally located which is great and near the Charente and sightseeing sites like the public gardens. I didn't have breakfast so cannot comment but my room was very nice and quiet at night. Staff at the hotel were all very welcoming, friendly and happy to answer any questions. I didn't eat at the hotel on this occasion. It met my expectations and I would book it again.
This hotel is set in beautiful surroundings with great views from the restaurant. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The location is good for visiting Saintes and the surrounding area. Breakfast, if a little pricey, offered nearly everything anyone would have wanted, whilst dinner in the restaurant is one of the reasons for choosing this hotel.
The people were soo friendly and also speak english. That’s not very often in France. Room was very clean, dog was allowed, it was quiet. Bed was Big and comfy. And we could check in at any time. Checkout was at 11 am - so we had no stress in the morning. We will be booking again in january!
Since we were travelling, the Hotel offers an excellent location (near the motorway). Extremely clean an very quite. We didn't took the breakfast option since there is a bakery just in the opposite of the Hotel. Due COVID we prefer to have our own arrangements.
Welcome by the manager was excellent. General condition of hotel was very good. The hotel is well placed with easy access and on site parking. Lovely town with walks and boat rides on river. Good sized room with double bed and en-suite shower room.
Very convenient location 500 away from the city center (old town) and near numerous free parking lots, with basic shops arround. Good for one short stay. The hotel room is clean and comfortable, normal. The covid measures are well enforced.
We have stayed in this hotel for a number of years. We like the fact that it is not at all like a chain hotel - it is quirkily French with a smile. The location is also great, right in the town so you can just walk around.
The softest towels of my 3-week stay in France! Comfy bed. Table for eating at. Ground-floor room ( very important for me), close to my car. Woman at front desk very accommodating.

A nice quiet place with spacious rooms, a wonderful pool, all singin' & dancin' breakfast and extremely nice host and hostess. It's one of these places you want to keep to yourself and tell no one about, but le clos des oiseaux deserves to be shared!
