This is a beautiful and comfortable hotel. Very good breakfast in a lovely dining room. It would be possible to breakfast outside in good weather. The bar and lounge area was nicely furnished. All the staff were pleasant and helpful.

Le Relais du Morvan, hotel in Vézelay

Le Relais du Morvan is located in the city center of Vezelay, set within the Morvan Natural Regional Park.

The location is good. Convenient for the village & the Basilica. The building structure is attractive, it needs to be more eye catching & brightening up. Paint, pots of plants. The bed was fine, clean white sheets & comfortable. There is a lack of surfaces & hooks in the bathroom. Difficulty in finding space to put toiletries & no hooks to hang even a shower cap on. Provided by myself. The room rate is very acceptable but it does lack user friendly facilities. The chamber maid/housekeeper does a good job. The reception area could do with more effort in regard to customer service. This may serve student guests but the approach for older categories needs a bit of polishing up.

The view towards Vezeley is grandiose. De kamer modern and fresh. Due to a health problem we had to leave earlier than we had reserved. The owner was gracious when she understood our problem.

    Vézelay is a crazy place.

Vézelay is a crazy place. It is hyped up in every tourist guide on the Bourgogne you can find, but it is actually a one street village on the top of a mountain whose only attraction is an oversized cathedral on the Way of St. James, and some tourist shops for decorative arts (if you like that). Rural exodus is unmistakable, there are several buildings for sale, and the ladies who run the hotel where we stayed told us that the village has only 70 regular inhabitants left, the rest are pilgrims and tourists. We only stayed for one night, passing through on our way back home, and for us it was perfect as it was. The hotel (Les Glycines) was great, very recommendable, the surrounding landscape is beautiful and possibly nice to explore wandering (we didn't try). Vézelay also seems to be a hot spot for pilgrims who find company there.

An amazing Romanesque basilica with a Main Street that climbs steeply (please note) up towards the facade. Loads of art shops and bars without being over the top. It’s close to the great Chablis wine regions.

A beautifully restored town with tons of history and local crafts, foods, art, etc. A close association with music, there was a music festival over 4 days with the main performers within and behind the Cathedral. We wished we had stayed another day!

The village and the famous medieval basilica are part of a world heritage listed pilgrimage network on the increasingly popular journey to Santiago in northwest Spain. The Basilica is one of the most beautiful medieval churches in France and has been a favourite of mine since studying medieval architectural history at university in the late 1960s. This was my fourth visit and it only get better as conservation and revitalisation programmes for the church and the village roll out over time.

I stayed in Vézelay as a stopping point on a drive down to the Auvergne. Nice place to stop for a night. Places to eat and have a drink and a beautiful little town with a very impressive basilica. However - it is very small - so I wouldn't want to stay there for much more than a day unless you have a specific event or festival.

We visited Vezelay because we read somewhere on the internet that it was once declared 'the most authentic French village in France'. Well it was pitoresque and yes it was worth a visit. But that was it. It is a daytrip spend there a couple of hours. Have a picnic in the gardens behind the Cathedral, beautiful views. Not a place to stay. If you do spend the night there have dinner (or lunch) at the 'la Fortune du Pot restaurant'. It has delicious and affordable, French cuisine.

Our room was at the top of the Hotel and had a view of the Basilica - one of our most favourite churches on earth ! There was a neighbouring St Bernard who sang when the bells rang - very appropriate as St Bernard himself preached in the Basilica. We had Dinner in the restaurant which was excellent with well prepared and presented dishes. Good local wine at a reasonable price. Breakfast was also good. We shall definitely return.
