Nice hidden gem. Found a smashing Heritage Centre of an old flagstone company. Walking trail around the old ruins/surviving buildings. Met a stoat on the pebbled beach, which absolutely made my day.
We stayed for a night before catching the ferry to Orkney. It was a good choice of booking as the host was friendly and informative. Our room was nice and clean and we were served a tasty breakfast in the morning.
Only a small village built on the crossroads and river, good stop for sightseeing and only 10mins from Thurso. Better parking here and has some decent local utility shops eg butcher, fresh veg, groceries and bank terminal although no bank. Hotel is ideal for staying and food. Lack of guest houses may be a problem. Close to excellent seafront for beach and Castle of Mey. 15 mins from Wick Airport.
While we stayed in Castletown for two nights we didn't really spend much time in it. We went down to a wee bay by the beach which was lovely, although extremely windy and we never got out of the car. Besides this, we tried one of the local takeaways (Krispy Chicken and Fish I think it was called) which was kind of like a chip shop but with a side of KFC but also did pizza and kebab. Food was amazing!
Castletown is a nice little village ideally situated as a base for exploring Caithness and Sutherland. Village has a good shop and butcher. Hotel does exellent meals. There is a heritage centre and pretty harbour. Also an excellent chip shop. Located with in easy reach of Thurso and Wick for more shops.
Small town between Wick and Thurso, but still bas good restaurant at a local hotel (Castle Hotel) where you can get evening meal. Conveniently placed for visiting Castle of Mey (in season) and Dunnet Head or taking Orkney ferries, as well as being on the North 500 route.
Everything about this hotel was excellent and exceeded my expectations. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The room was clean and comfortable. Good service, good food and drink in the restaurant at very reasonable prices. Wide choice for the buffet breakfast. Close to Dounreay and I will stay again if in the area.
Castletown
Location was breathtakingly beautiful. The village of Castletown only a few minutes away has a good chippy and a good wee local shop that sells all you need. Fantastic part of Scotland.
