Good public transport. Good shopping centres. Cheap hotels. Good bars, theatres and music venues - and they’re not always too busy. Inexpensive city compared to (e.g.) London, Edinburgh or Bristol - but you can buy a Rolex or a Bentley if you must ! Oh and don’t forget the top-flight football and rugby teams. The immediate surrounding countryside is full of interesting villages and short-to-medium length walks, good pubs for a meal, a very long and worth-visiting steam heritage railway, etc. The city has several science-themed museums. It’s also extremely multicultural - many Indian jewellery shops and food outlets, for example; and home to two highly regarded universities. Burial place of medieval King Richard III, rediscovered in 2015. If you drive, use the park-&-ride if it’s at a suitable time of day or plan your car parking carefully in advance; the city has removed a lot of the street parking in favour of taxi ranks that seem to be deserted.
So much history to see in a very attractive city with very friendly "natives"! A great selection of eateries and plenty to engage visitors both in the city and in the surrounding area. A revelation to us, as first time visitors.
Its a compact city with everything in easy walking distance. I was planning a trip for later in the year and within one day could easily walk to Victoria Park and the Clarendon Park area (great second hand book shop Loros on Queens Road), the Uni of Leicester and de Montfort Uni for their architecture, the Museum and Art Gallery on New Walk, Newarke House Museum and St Mary de Castro church, Richard III centre, (where the tourist information and the staff are extremely helpful), the Guildhall, and the market. But you would need more than a day to look at these places properly. There are great little streets and eateries, Konak on London Road for the evening and Hollys on St Martins for lunch tested and found excellent. The architecture is varied and fun. There is excellent signage and superb information boards everywhere. There are modern shopping malls- not tested. A short trip to the Space Centre and the free Abbey Pumping museum next door could occupy a day, particularly if you walk through to the Golden Mile on Belgrave Road (do not follow all the signs- head across to Law Street- focussing on the Wolsey Chimney-this was the only time that signage takes you a bit out of your way.)
We stayed in the museum for 4 hours including the lovely modern cafe there was also a brass quartet playing at the time. We visited the space centre and the pump museum you need a full day so much to see . We managed a night in the beautiful De Montfort hall seeing a comedian and also a reggae evening at the funky 2 cafe after food at the Efes restaurant well worth a visit. Leicester has a lot to see and do so a few days is advisable to enjoy its attractions.
first visit and one night only stayed at the Villare hotel in a basic room, but very good price - but saw many interesting features and architecture that i would love to revisit and investigate. very clean friendly place. ate at 1573 a bit pricey but good high quality food and attentive staff
Leicester is home to the National Space Centre - a fascinating visit. The cathedral has the tomb of Richard III (last king to die in battle in England, bones found quite recently under a car park). Good free city museum and art gallery up New Walks. Many options on eating in the same area. Long-standing traditional market in the city centre. In the area around Leicester, you can go 11 miles north to Loughborough to the Great Central (steam) Railway, or west to the Bosworth Battlefield (where Richard III died in 1485) exhibition.
Leicester
The location was very good for us. Within pleasant walking distance of DeMonfort Hall, and the city centre. The property is cleaned and well looked after by a management company. An ideal place for four friends to share over a weekend. Much better than any hotel options. The rear garden/patio was a real bonus in the pleasant weather we were lucky enough to enjoy. Comfortable, clean and plenty of space. Hopefully we will be able to book this place again.
Considering the price, I think this hotel really exceeds my expectation. Leicester City Centre is actually not big so actually I can go everywhere on foot from the hotel. The host has upgraded me to a double room for free and it is in the back of the building so it is quite quiet. The room is not big but comfy and clean. Staff are very friendly and you can pay extra if you want a late check-out. I think I will stay here again if I am coming back.
The location was good and very easy to get to by car or walking from Leicester city centre. The breakfast had a good section of hot and cold items and didn't finish till 11am . Our room was spacious and clean . Also liked the fact I didn't have to pay for parking which was fab
Leicester
The location as it was within walking distance to the University of Leicester and the City Centre. We were there for our son's graduation and rented two flats. Our stay was short so we managed. The essentials were provided in the kitchen and having a small desk was helpful.
All the staff were super friendly and helpful. The hotel is lovely inside and the restaurant food is delicious. We had a celebratory afternoon tea the next day for a large family group which was catered for very well. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds.
the hotel is beautiful, nice ambience and the location is great. the room was quite clean and i was given a room on the 7th floor which had a nice view. the staff at the breakfast & bar were very courteous & friendly. the breakfast was very good.
