Plenty of local beauty spots to soak up the scenery of South Uist, especially on the west coast as when looking out to sea and you realize the next land fall is Canada. Locals are very friendly and accommodating, the roads are well kept and in good order. Plenty of options for room and board where you will be treated like a local and offered local knowledge of things to do and experience.
The accommodation was clean and tidy. Rupert is very friendly and welcoming with great knowledge of the area and what to watch out for. He really makes a stay here feel relaxed and safe. Great breakfast and he kindly made a breakfast to go when we had to leave for an early morning ferry. Would thoroughly recommend.
It is an idyllic spot on the Hebridean Way with a daily ferry to Mallaig. The walking options vary from mile after mile of glorious white sandy beaches to some very rugged though not difficult mountains. There are also possibilities for excursions on small boats. There is a bus up or down the Uists every 2 hours making it more accessible for those without cars. There is a new marina at Lochboisdale. There is a good Co-Op at Daliburgh - 3 miles from Lochboisdale. If the weather is grim there are several cafes.
Nice to see island life. We visited the museum, our lady of the isles statue, Flora macdonald birth place, the roundhouses and Hebridean craft shop. We also went for a walk along the beach. If I had more time I would have done a few more walks to get the sea air.
Lochboisdale is a small settlement with few facilities. However, the beaches are amazing. With a good ferry link to Mallaig, it is a good start for a walk or cycle. Andy picked us up at the ferry port. We went to Beneray on the bus and this is excellent too - it stops at the end of Andy’s lane.
There is not much here, if you like to walk or bike there is plenty, but this is a fairly evacuated area. Polochar Inn has the best food though the Borrowdale Hotel also has some nice dishes. Definitely do a boat tour to Mingulay, the walking is difficult, but the wildlife is spectacular. Just south of the Borrowdale Hotel take a right and go down to some very nice roundhouses. The Kildonan museum is wonderful.
