Great fishing village and our hop off place for the ferry to the Western Isles. The journey there on the train from Glasgow was fantastic through mountains and by lochs. The hotel is around the corner from the station. The staff are delightful. We had dinner nearby but next time will try the hotel restaurant which looked good. The photos below see from our window in the West Highland Hotel.
It’s a small little town and we only stayed one night to catch a boat the next day. We had dinner and beers at the steam inn and the food was great! The local bakery was amazing. I had the best almond croissant I ever had and a meringue the size of my hand. The Marine Bar is a great place to get a pint. The bartender and locals there were very friendly. Pro tip- the bathroom that says Laddies is not for women ☺️ There’s some cute shops with quality product. The Ginger knit shop is wonderful as well as the outdoor gear shop which I forgot the name of and a new Harry Potter shop if you’re taking the Jacobite steam train which we did on our return trip. Recommend first class on the train. There’s quite a few cute b&b’s there as well as a hotel. There’s not much to do so a night/day there sufficed us. Would recommend a ferry trip to Skye.
Mallaig is lovely. A walk along the harbour is a must. There are many trips out on boats which can be booked on the harbour. A trip to Skye for the day is a must as is a boat trip to Knoydart or out to see the seals. Car parking can be a bit of a nightmare in high season. The Steam Train comes into Mallaig Station everyday during the season and is worth a look especially if you are a Harry Potter Fan, There are many places to eat in Mallaig. There is a Pizza Place near the harbour which is nice. The West Highland Hotel up the hill is lovely with great views out over the water, Obviously in Mallaig Fish and Sea food are a must. If your on a budget The Fisherman's Missions does good food at a reasonable price and also has a second hand bookshop.
We travelled by train from Glasgow to Mallaig to experience the world famous scenic route up the west coast of Scotland and despite the rain, it did not disappoint. We chose the Marine hotel due to proximity to the station and it was ideal for us. We had drinks and food at the Steam Inn and Clachaig Inn, both of which had good menus and great service. We took a return, non landing trip on the Inverie Ferry, from the pier at Mallaig, which took approx 1 hour, the crew were helpful and friendly.
It's a great shame that Mallaig closes right down in the close season. After drooling over the menus of a few of the Restaurants in town, it turns out that there were only two pubs in town that offered food when I was there. Nice enough town, great location.
It provided me with exactly what i needed - a break. A fantastic harbour village surrounded by rugged countryside and wonderful driving experience. Hotel staff were exceptionally kind and helpful after i had a fall.
Mallaig
Extremely well equipped kitchen, plus a few little extras to make life easier such as butter, bread, some lovely pastries, a bottle of wine - lovely personal touches we were not expecting. Father Stan was a fantastic host and the whole booking process/collection of keys was so easy - he responds super quick to any enquiries. The location is stunning and the accommodation itself exceeded our expectations. Lots of mod cons and a lovely big bathroom!
Friendly, helpful staff. View across the Sound of Sleet from bedroom was super. The inclusive breakfast was good with generous portions and offered many choices, both hot and cold, fruit juices and a range of fresh fruits. Mallaig is a small town; this hotel was very convenient for the train. Indeed the room looked out across the railway and harbour to Skye, so there were great views of the Jacobite steam engine and Skye.
Mallaig
It’s very central in Mallaig, across the road from the ferry and the train station. Next door is the Co-op. Our room had a view of the platform the Harry Potter train terminates and the sunsets over the bay. It has a very welcoming and cosy atmosphere and the kitchen is well equipped. The owner is very friendly and helpful and a mine of information.
Very comfortable and well equipped room, hotel easy to find, very close to everything including the harbour, friendly and welcoming staff providing great service, the bar and restaurant are well laid out, spotlessly clean with a good menu of lovely food and a good hearty breakfast.
Lovely hotel with great views over the harbour and good for getting on and off the ferry. newly renovated , really nice rooms and well equiped. Great breakfast but Limited menu for dinner - plenty of other choice for dinner within one block. Good On-site parking out the back.
