This was our first visit to the Isle of Wight.

This was our first visit to the Isle of Wight. The ferry charges are ridiculously high. If this was Sweden or Japan they would have built a bridge by now! We found the roads to be very busy and many of the towns seemed rather 'run-down' . It was a pity that lovely old towns such as Godshill and Shanklin were full of trinket shops and appeared rather 'tacky'. The Needles was a great disappointment with thousands of visitors and excessive commercialisation. We turned away and went elsewhere.

Shanklin is a place of two halves, the seafront with a beach, amusements, two crazy golf courses and a small fairground. The old village is very pretty and has lots of friendly pubs to visit. The chine links both areas, a magical place in the evening with beautiful lights and entertainment a couple to times a week. The town is small but there are some lovely gift shops and antique shops. It is an excellent base for visiting other areas and attractions on the island.

Shanklin is a charming seaside venue. Two really good beachside restaurants which serves great food , a pub right on the beach and a good fish and chip place. Lovely restaurants in the village especially the Italian Pavarotti’s. Excellent value & delicious Italian food. We went there several times. Great pubs selling good food and some nice shops and a tea room. What’s not to like !
