The location was amazing for our needs, the grounds and property was stunning, as was the food in the restaurant and breakfast the following morning. The room was big and beds comfy. As ex- Cumbrians, we were married & living in Cumbria for 45 years,we always advise friends to avoid the tourist places in the Lakes & head to the coast & villages like Wigton. Far less crowded, excellent accommodation and less expensive.
Wigton is just outside of the Lakes. There is almost nothing in the small town, pub, few shops. The hotel is surrounded by fields but there is another pub about a 15 minute walk along the main road - we never tried it, never had a torch!. Bowness on Solway is not far from Wigton, quiet village but fantastic views across the Solway, worth a visit. It is about a half hour drive to Keswick and all the life there.
I really like Wigton, although I may be biased as my daughter and her family live there! Wigton may not be typically pretty and characterful like some other nearby places, but as a little market town it offers an eclectic mix of independent shops, traditional butchers, bakers, greengrocers and small galleries as well as some more well-known names such as Greggs, B&M, Lidl and Co-op. (And, like many small towns, it has a fair selection of charity shops!) There are also takeaways and an Indian restaurant, but we didn't use these so I can't really comment on them. Although it has several pubs, I have to be honest and say none of them were particularly good, which is a great shame. Wigton doesn't have any places to stay over (believe me, we've searched!) but if you stay anywhere close then Wigton is certainly worth at least a little look around and has enough shops to supply you with all you might need during your stay.
My sister and I had a superb stay at the lodge at Wallace Lane Farm. John picked us up from in the middle of nowhere after it getting dark and us not knowing how much further we would have to walk and dropped us about 10 miles the following morning nearer to Keswick which we wanted to walk to. It was an absolute pleasure staying at Wallace Lane farm and I could not fault it in anyway. I certainly will come again. Absolutely loved it.
We were a group of twenty staying in three lodges plus Hayloft. Excellent accommodation though it did mean some ladies sharing double beds at night. View was beautiful and very relaxing place to stay. Within short driving distance of about 5 to 6 miles from pubs, shops and train station at Dalston.
Wigton
The property is in a working farm, so the children loved seeing the baby cows. Wigton is just a few miles away with shops and supermarkets. There's a good variety of places to eat, plus the coast is only 12 miles away in Silloth, a nice little seaside town. The owners could not be more helpful, even providing little toys for the kids to play with and all Covid safe! We will definitely come back as this visit was far to short!
Wigton
A beautiful cottage in stunning countryside. A great location for touring the lakes and Scotland. About 20 minutes to the coast. Only a couple of miles from Wigton, which has plently of supplies and petrol. The farm was exceptionally clean with a tarmac drive to private parking. Five star hosts without being intrusive. The home cooked food available was delicious! Highly recommended!
Wigton
Spotlessly clean, a very pleasant & attentive host with a lovely welcome pack of essentials, including a smashing homemade cake. Great location for the Solway Coast & Northern Lakes… We chose this to be close to our favourite restaurant “Scran” in Wigton, who champion local produce.. and will definitely stay again for our next Cumbrian trip.
Wigton
Great location in the centre of Wigton town, close to the Lake District for all the sightseeing. Local shops provided for all the requirements of my holiday. The apartment was very comfortable and clean and tidy on my arrival. Would stay again.
Wigton
This was an exceptional room with everything just perfect. Great host and lovely breakfast. Location very nice and easy to find Would definitely use this bed and breakfast again if in the area. It was a real credit to the owners.
it was quite unique. clean, and well appointed. the kitchen was small with no oven but they left more than sufficient foods for breakfast and snacks. it’s a great area- would come back and stay longer.
Wigton
Beautiful grounds and lovely looking hotel. Not very modern but this is in keeping with the history of the building. Pleasant, accommodating staff. Very cute house cat which my little boy loved.
