The city has a perfect size and a stunningly beautiful location. it is located on a peninsula that extends into the beautiful lake. On the outer part of the peninsula is a small mountain with a café on top. You can drive all the way around the peninsula. Men and fishermen sit along the narrow road. There are as many as 10 different good eating fish in the lake. In the middle there is a large cave that you can visit. You can get many hundreds of meters into the cave, probably 600 meters. As the town is located on this peninsula, there are coasts on two sides of the town with many cafes and eateries. The inner part of the city is located on a steep hill so many of the streets here are extremely steep and one-way. This is where man find a large number of ancient churches from the Byzantine period. Just outside the city is an archeological site where models have been built of how people are thought to have lived in thatched huts 5000 years ago. I had wonderful dinner at Ντολτσό Εστιατόριο restaurant in old part of the city not far from the south shore. the restaurant serves many traditional Greek dishes. The food is really tasty.
A beautiful city with a tranquil lake for added relaxation. The walk along the lake with the large variety of cafes, bars and restaurants are especially welcoming to the traveler. A great spot for days of relaxing.
Very special place with complex ambience between the hilly town of beautiful Balkan ottoman city architecture and the lake. The city packed with long history, with recognizable old shine. We were asked to be helped many times. We spent our short time (one evening and one morning) only in walking, looking at the architecture, sitting outside drinking and it was very relaxing. There would be lot of things to in couple of days.
Beautiful village. Very historical with a lot of character. I just wish I could have stayed longer. Great restaurants with excellent cuisine and local wines. The lake surrounded by the mountains was divine.
City is run-down, dirty, in urgent need of repair, facelift and clean-up. The impact of the economic crisis in Greece is very evident. There are no activities for tourists. This place could be like Interlaken!
Kastoria is a lovely town in a quite beautiful setting on an exquisite lake. The old town is cobblestoned and hilly, not ideal for anyone with ambulatory difficulties, however taxis are plentiful and inexpensive. The town is noted for its extraordinary byzantine churches and old, Turkish style mansions. There is not a whole lot more to do, but the serenity of sipping a coffee or a glass of wine at a cafe at the edge of the lake is unparalleled. The surrounding countryside offers numerous reasons for excursions. We even managed a day in neighboring southern Albania- a fascinating experience.
