The Roads into Cliffden seriously need attention. I feel sorry for the local people who commute in and out every day. Thinking that this village has travellers from all over the world visit on a regular basis it's disgusting.
Clifden was a lovely little village, had some really unique little shops, and great pubs and restaurants. Location was very convenient to a lot of the sights we wanted to see - waterfalls, the Connemara National Park, the Killarry Fjord, Kylemore Abby, and more! The town was easy to navigate and the locals were always willing to help you find what you're looking for.
Clifden Arts Festival. One of the best in the world in my opinion. Variety of events, music, plays, art exhibitions, archaeology day trips, talks, readings, etc. local music in restaurants and bars every night, friendly people, very accommodating.
We stayed just outside Clifden for three days while we visited Connemara and the national park. I was disappointed at how touristy this town was, I really thought this would be our one local experience to look forward to and it was over-crowded by French tourists. Even our B&B host was French, we met no Irish locals there and even the pub's and "traditional music nights" were very tourist oriented and felt disingenuous. Even a lot of the restaurant staff were English college students on summer break. Its a cute, very European looking town consisting of two main streets but they were full of over-priced touristy souvenir shops. The food in all of the restaurants was very over priced too. I truthfully would not recommend a visit to Clifden if you are looking for a local, Irish experience. It wasn't terrible but I wouldn't give it more than a half-day visit.
if the weathers ok then your holiday will be ok. For anyone who has never been to Clifden I would suggest the drive from Clifden to Westport and admire the most beautiful scenery you could wish to see. The people are very friendly and make you welcome and the music bars are something special. Overall Clifden is a wonderful place but one piece of advice, take plenty of euros because its not cheap, I hope, for their sakes they don't price themselves out of the market.
Clifden is a lovely place, great location with easy access to many other lovely areas around Connemara. Diamond Hill walk well worth the visit for the fab views. Kylemore Abbey, Roundstone, Omey Island all lovely places to see.
“The staff went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. We loved the location on the rural coast. We enjoyed wonderful walks from the hotel along narrow winding roads flanked by dry stone walls, as well as the beautiful beaches that we had to ourselves. Our meals in the restaurant were delicious. Waiter, "Connor" was lovely.”
“Great staff, very helpful. Everything was extremely tidy, you could really tell the owner cared about the hostel and your experience. Easy to reach the connemara national park, there are also a few trails that leave from clifden, no transport needed.”
“The staff were extremely helpful. Great Irish Breakfast each morning and a great location with easy access to Clifden.”
“Really lovely stay, very spacious and comfortable room. Breakfast was made to order each day and was delicious! Clifden is a great town!”
“Authentic atmosphere, excellent food, very helpful staff, high level of cleanliness. This family run hotel is central and a great base for exploring the region.”
