This is a quaint area and full of history. My family roots are from here and we spent two days tracking our ancestry. The history museum was nicely done and included an exhibition dedicated to the Centennial of the 2016 Uprising in Ireland. It is self guided and FREE. It was interesting to travel during this time and learn where these important members in history began their journey. We rented a car which was the best way to get around even if driving is challenging on the left side of the road for Americans! The countryside is gorgeous and loaded with lots of little pubs. It's also a great area just to walk and immerse yourself in an historical Irish village. We went out to Castle Leslie too to ride as my daughter and I are avid equestrians. Staff, owners and trainers were gracious and friendly and even welcome non-riders to tour the stables and observe lessons in the covered arena. We stayed at the Hillgrove Resort. It is modern with plenty of activities indoors if you choose to relax. The food was great, staff friendly and our room was luxurious!
The museum and An Poc Fada (pub) were highlights. There wasn't much of anything else in the town. We were referred to the hotel numerous times, but did not go. Most of the pubs we found online were out of business.
“What’s fabulous stay we had here. It was great. The B and B was great, so central and very comfortable. We had a wedding in Monaghan and now looking back I’m glad I booked the B and B instead of the hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was served until 10am the next morning and it was cooked to order, so delicious and fresh. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and I would recommend it for anyone.”
“Lovely friendly hotel with a nice pool and steam room.”
“We stayed here because we had a wedding in the Hillgrove Hotel. Just 200m down the road so it was really handy for us. Lovely B&B, clean with friendly staff. I'd stay here again no problem.”
“This is a large hotel on the edge of town with pleasant decor, good parking & a very good restaurant & bar. We checked in after Christmas closure so there were some hiccups at reception.”
“Hotel was comfortable and stylish and staff were friendly. I attended a wedding and the afternoon tea when we returned to the hotel was a lovely touch, very simple but well done and the room was very elegant”
