I stayed at TU Casa for five days while volunteering at Mother House, and it was the perfect home base for my time in Kolkata. The location is excellent—about a 15–20 minute walk to Mother House along a busy main thoroughfare, and I felt safe walking it. For 6:00 AM Mass, an Uber was incredibly easy to arrange, usually ₹130–₹160 and only about a five-minute ride. It’s also very close to upscale Quest Mall, convenient to bus routes, and ideally situated for exploring the city. But what really made my stay was the staff. Everyone was genuinely warm, friendly, helpful, and welcoming. And the food! Everything was immaculately prepared and absolutely delicious—far better than I expected from a hotel stay. I’m already planning to return to Kolkata for about two weeks in late October or November, and there’s no question where I’ll stay. TU Casa will be my home in Kolkata. Highly, highly recommended!

I didn’t actually stay at this hotel, so I can’t comment on the room. However, the staff were really nice and helpful. When we found out we couldn’t stay, they gave us WiFi so we could book another hotel since we didn’t have a SIM or internet yet. They also didn’t charge us anything, which I really appreciated. The location was also great, especially being very close to the hospitals.

Guest review by Mrs. Roy - Shopping
It might be a bit unfair for me to comment, as I have a deep emotional connection and many childhood memories tied to Kolkata. I was born here and grew up in this city until my late teenage years. A lot has changed since then—both for better and for worse. If you’re visiting as a tourist, it’s best to stay in a good hotel and dine at reputable restaurants that maintain proper hygiene. Book your tours through trusted companies or your hotel concierge. There is so much to see, enjoy, and cherish. And if you love shopping—this is truly a bargain hunter’s paradise, if you know how to navigate it! If you’re willing to spend a bit more, your overall experience will likely be excellent. The people are incredibly friendly and always ready to help. Most locals understand and speak English, so language shouldn’t be a concern. A few practical tips: Carry hand sanitizer Wear a mask in crowded areas Drink only bottled (mineral) water Wear light cotton clothing Use Uber for easy transport Keep some cash handy Avoid drinking tap water Stay cautious of pickpockets and scammers (as you would in many major cities, like Italy) Confession: I absolutely love Kolkata and try to visit at least once every year!

Guest review by Varghese - Shopping
The best season to visit Kolkata would be between Mid January to February, although November to March could be tolerable. However, it could get messy during the rainy season, and really hot during summer. Kolkata is an ideal city for shopping related to leather goods, bags, purses, and textiles. Barabazar (or the big market located on MG Road close to Howrah Bridge) is a very big shopping center. But never let touts lead you to their favorite shops. Shopping on the streets, need bargaining skills, while established shops are dependable. Another place for shopping is close to James Hickey Sarani and Lenin Sarani. The city does not have any exclusive malls dedicated to textile shopping such as Pothis or Jayalakshmi or Kalyan Silks as in Southern India . The magnificent Howrah Bridge, the boat-ride across the Hoogly river, the Science City, Eden cricket stadium, Victoria Memorial, the Indian Museum, the Metcalfe Hall, the Writer's Building, and the Dacres lane. The South City Mall with the smaller textile boutiques that sell Tussar silk sarees and Jamdani sarees around the mall, the Acropolis Mall, and the tram (though not well-maintained) are the most interesting places to visit. Malls in Kolkata do not have departmental stores that stock daily necessities like in other parts of India. Special mutton biriyani and katti rolls at Arsalan Restaurant, and Zeeshan are fantastic. Always take food from established restaurants, sweet shops, and Food Courts in malls. Rapido travel aggregator provides the cheapest and fastest mode of connectivity in addition to Uber and the yellow Ambassador cab in Kolkata. Stay in hotels closer to the city to enjoy your visit.

Guest review by DAVID - Transportation and taxis
I enjoyed Kolkata a lot. I found the locals kind, welcoming and cultured. The food was excellent. I tried street food, slightly more upscale food, and sweets from several sweets shops, and was impressed by the quality. The vibe at the famous Kolkata International Book Fair was great, and it was heartwarming to see how much Kolkatans love to read real books. One highlight was the architecture near Shyambazar, an old area of Kolkata. The metro was easy to navigate and it was clean and safe. The Indian Museum was good, but both inside and outside the museum people target foreigners for sales or donations. Away from tourist sites, however, I didn't notice any targeting of foreigners and simply felt welcomed by the locals. I'm glad to have experienced Kolkata's culture and hospitality.

Guest review by DINESH - Transportation and taxis
It is a city of scamsters and touters. I have not seen a single city in the world except Kolkata where almost all cab and taxi services (including ola, uber and bikes etc) ask the customer for more money than what is shown in the app and threaten to cancel the ride otherwise. The worker class and labour class is fully corrupt

Guest review by Sankaran - Transportation and taxis
Kolkata, particularly North and South, is where 19th century and 21st century co-exist! A walk down any street, and you can hear Past breathing down your neck! Easily the most economical city in India, a lifestyle that, say, costs you ₹1000 in any other metro, would cost you only ₹700+ here! Kolkata is not just a city, its a spirit to be experienced. While there, don't forget the street food stalls and the tram ride. Nothing elsewhere in India can compare.

Guest review by Mumeena - Transportation and taxis
Kolkata's visit is a very pleasant experience, matched all my expectations, even exceeded at some points. Tried to visit as many as the spots that could be covered in 4 days. Princep ghat, Victoria memorial, St. Paul's Cathedral, Jorasanko Thakurbari, Hawrah Bridge, Indian Museum were a few among them. All the spots were really fascinating and charming as all these spots are connected to the history of the British Empire. Park Street, Marquis Street,  and Sudder Street are great locations for the stay as most of the tourist flocs on these streets can reach all the necessities within walking distance. The roads of the salt lake and the city center were really amazing. South city mall is a really great place to visit, shop, and spent time but the Quest mall is the best to shop! The best street food I found was the Malai kulfi and lemon soda, everyone should try these at least once. Riding taxis to reach places is very easy but costly as well. Anyone trying to do a budget trip should try their Metro rails to reach their desired places at a very low cost without facing any traffic.

We had a great stay at Hotel Royal Crowne near Kolkata Airport. The rooms were spotless and the bathrooms were in excellent condition. The staff impressed us with their courteous and attentive service, making us feel truly welcome. Having food options available at the hotel was a big plus, and everything we tried was delicious. The location is incredibly convenient—just 1.2 km from the airport—which made our travel stress-free. Overall, a fantastic choice for anyone looking for comfort and convenience near the airport.
