Featuring panoramic views of the scenic nature surroundings, Hotel Kjarnalundur is 3.1 mi from central Akureyri and just 1.2 mi from the Akureyri Airport. It offers an on-site restaurant. Super friendly welcome. Guitars in the reception area which my son was delighted he could play with. Major plus for him as he was missing his music! Our family room was amazing and the beds were super comfy. Huge couch that we could all fit on to watch a bit of TV in the evening (5 people). Tea and coffee facilities. Clean bathroom with lovely shower. Outdoor hot tubs were a wonderful bonus and we really enjoyed them. Breakfast was delicious, too.

This place really is the gem of the north of Iceland. I regret only making a one night stay here and wish we could have stayed 2-3 days here. So much to see and so many places to eat. We will back next year for sure!
Akureyri is wonderful throughout the year. It has a beautiful botanical garden great museums, pools and one can explore a lot more around the city. There are several nice restaurants in the city and outside.
Akureyri is perfect place to explore the north, but the city itself is beautiful with the colorful houses and the botanical garden. The accommodation has a balcony, which is perfect to watch the northern lights.
Akureyri is a compact, pretty town with great restaurants. The surrounding area is beautiful with the sea and mountains. Day trips to waterfalls, lava fields, a large lake, and incredible views. Great hiking.
Akureyri is a great small city with many museums, a beautiful botanical garden, shopping, and access to many activities such as whale watching tours. We liked it much better than Reykjavik and can't wait until they finish their international airport, so we can fly directly there!
We were mostly passing through. We planned to do whale watching out of husavik, but forgot the plan and did it out of Akureyri -- probably because we were tired and threw the trip together somewhat haphazardly. We did see a whale. It was pretty cool. We only saw the back, the tail, and blow spray, but it's still not something you're going to see every day. And it's kind of crazy that these giant things are just swimming underneath you. The town is quaint. Food options were good, but like most (all?) of Iceland, crazy expensive. 2-3 times what I might expect to spend other trips. Really quite remarkable how expensive the food is. The vibe seemed vaguely like a small town on Lake Superior of Lake Michigan in the US. It's not a bad jumping off point for other points of interest within an hour or two from there. Hotel room availability was better than elsewhere in area. I found the landscape around the north phenomenal. Some of my favorite driving was within an hour of Akureyri in both directions. If your are heading towards or coming from the North / East parts of the country I suggest you skip the tunnel. The tunnel costs $10, and it only saves you 10-15 minutes, and the scenery on the "long" way felt well worth it. When you come in towards Akureyri from the North (bypassing the tunnel) there is a point where you come off the top of the hill, and look down on to the fjord, and it was amazing. I can still picture it. The culture center had some interesting art on display, and it provides a good public bathroom location. Overall, cute little town, not sure how much there is to do there, but that wasn't our main focus on the trip.
Akureyri
It is quite a big studio, it looked like a home rather than a typical hotel room or a guest house. It has a refrigerator, big sink, plates and utensils, big eating table, sofas, chairs, and a big bathroom. There were pieces of art hanging on the walls, and a book about one of the artists, which was very nice. Parking is free and there is plenty of spaces to park. Very convenient location. Breakfast was not included, but we preferred to prepare our own anyway.
The hotel was right in the town center and everything is within walking distance. There is parking on street and around - for free after 4pm and until 10am on weekdays (super convenient). The room was large and luxurious and staff was super friendly (TV was not working and they offered us a discount on dinner since we decided to eat there). Food was delicious (dinner and breakfast).
The location was very convenient, a short walk from the central restaurants/bars but just distant enough to not be noisy, and just off the main road (1). The quality of the breakfast food was very high (but a la carte, not a buffet like most hotels). Getting the PIN to unlock our room by text was very convenient for arriving late.
This is a return visit for us to the Hotel Kea in downtown Akureyri. The staff, the facility and the location continue to be what draws us back. Enjoying Happy Hour out on the patio/terrace is a bonus. Breakfast is included and it is an abundant buffet. The downtown area is very walkable, right from the hotel.
This is a new hotel and is extemely comfortable with amazing views from all the rooms.Big modern bathroom. It was only a 5 minute drive into town. The host was extremely kind, very knowledgable and always available. He prepared a fabulous breakfast for us at 7am.
The staff were very nice, we were able to get a late checkout which was wonderful. The breakfast was great, the room was spacious and clean. The location of the hotel is very cosy.
Delicious breakfast with a lot of choices. Modern room with good shower and bed. Very nice restaurant. It was one of the best diners we had in Iceland. Cozy bar with fireplace.
Beautiful hotel in Akureyri. Very elegant and confortable. The room was cozy and the bathroom was clean. Very good breakfast with views to the fiord.
Akureyri
It’s an old house converted to a hotel. The room is clean. Each floor shares a kettle and tea cups. Plenty of restaurants nearby.
Loved the room decorations and the restaurant for breakfast.
