A very interesting, lovely ancient walled city with archaeological sites and interesting streets with weekend open air markets for meat, fish, fruit and veg. Many good bars and cafes for food and refreshment. Very well worth visiting!
Volterra is extremely attractive and has plenty of bars and restaurants. Staying there is good because thousands of visitors arrive just for the day but are not there early in the morning or late in the evening. The views are spectacular. The crowds, especially hordes of teenagers, are unavoidable but off putting. There are other equally attractive and dramatic Hill towns in Tuscany but it is worth the trip.
The museum is totally outdated and is more a storage room for the Etruscan tomb stones than a cultural institution where one can learn about historic facts, context, meaning, latest discoveries, various theories etc. It should definitely be modernised. The city itself is nice, a typical Tuscan hilltop city. with a panoramic view. Worth a half-day trip from Florence or Siena.
The old town of Volterra provides lots of great restaurants, is the heart of Alabaster art work with plenty of opportunities to find unique pieces of art, or the perfect souvenir from your stay in Volterra. I enjoyed walking through narrow streets and looking at the many old stone buildings which were build many hundreds of years ago.
Beautiful! One afternoon, tired of waking we sat on a bench for 2 hours admiring the Valley and watching the sunset, very peaceful and not as much turists as the other places we visited! The right place for me!
Beautiful, less touristy hill town. A few interesting museums, nice restaurants, cute shops. As with any hill town, parking is a challenge,, and if you stay within the old city walls, you park and walk your things in. While I wouldn't use it as a homebased to explore Tuscany, it is definitely worth one or two nights stay. I far preferred it over San Gimignano and Siena.
Hotel staff was great and friendly. They are taking the COVID precautions seriously. They disinfected my key in front of me and sealed it in a bag. The TV remote was disinfected and in a bag. Breakfast was offered with different options such as a buffet they serve you at a time you select, or you can opt for it brought to your room. Location was awsome, close to many of the main sites. You can drive your car to the hotel to unload luggage before parking in one of the many lots. I enjoyed my stay greatly and would stay here again.
Volterra
Set in magnificent countryside between Volterra and Colle Val d'Elsa, with proximity to San Gimignano, Il Boschetto is a perfect place to stay for an authentic Tuscan experience while enjoying peace and the songs of nightingales. Rooms are simple but clean and comfortable, and the restaurant is in itself an excellent destination for the local cooking. The owners and staff are welcoming and attentive, and we fully intend to return. Thank you to Dario, Samantha, and Laura.
