Hotel Platon offers public hot-spring baths and saunas at the famous Togura Kamiyamada hot-spring district. Free wired internet access is provided in each room. It was very cheap! I was midway on a road trip so checked in late, slept, woke up early, left; it was an appropriate place to stop and sleep. The onsen is good. The facilities are simple/basic but it's really good onsen water.

Chukka looks an interesting small town in the mountains, we passed many apricot orchards on the train before we arrived. We did not have time to explore and would have loved to have gone hiking. There are hot foot baths/foot onsens to experience and the town has a network of natural hot water piped though it. We stayed in a old traditional wooden royken which had Onsen baths and welcoming owners.
I loved everything. You Can easily visit the place walking like I did. I walked around by night in yukata and geta. I went to Aratojo Castle which offer à splendid panoramic view of the town and I ate delicious cold soba in the cafétéria next to the ryokan. Of course, I tried the onsens : so goood. It was a perfect stay!
We liked the easy cycling and mountain views. Travel by train was relatively easy once you got to grips with the local railway routes. Lots of places were accessible but there are very few English speaking travelers here and eating out could be a challenge.
Chikuma is a gorgeous rural town in the mountains of Nagano prefecture that any nature lover would enjoy. If visiting during the warmer months, I really recommend taking a long walk and enjoying the lush greenery.
Togura is a small onsen town within Chikuma. It's close to ski fields and full of wonderful traditional Japanese restaurants. We had a wonderful time walking around the town in the yukakta provided by Kamesei Ryokan (where we stayed). It's a very quaint Japanese town, the locals are very friendly and the restaurants are fantastic! We also visited the Jigokudani snow monkey park during our stay in chikuma (about 1 hour each way).
A wonderful stop for rest and relaxation, especially if you're visiting busier areas around Japan. After time in Tokyo and even Kyoto, a stop in Chikuma, specifically Togura, will completely rejuvenate you. My favorite experience there, aside from staying at Kamesei Ryokan, would have to be the kabuki/variety show at Taishokan. It is magical.
