Hakuba valley is one of the most magical places we've visited in Japan. The Japanese Alps under snowfall are just breathtakingly beautiful, as is the village of Hakuba. Everyone we came across be it at a restaurant, bar, cafe, ski rental/ski resort staff etc were so very friendly, accommodating and just made for a wonderful experience. You can tell the locals are happy to see and assist people visiting their town and are pleased for the service travelers bring, the sense of community in Hakuba is tangible, neighbors helping neighbors, such a lovely place. Wish we would have stayed longer. Highly recommend visiting this magical little village, you won't regret it!
Hakuba is a great place to snowboard and after boarding all day there's plenty to do. Unfortunately COVID is not cooperating. I recommend this for anyone staying overnight. Plenty of mountains to choose from with varying levels for any boarder that includes backcountry. Plenty of English language assistance. Right now I recommend chalet style accommodations rather than hotels; however, you will need to provide your food by shopping locally. You can get a full day lift ticket for about $50.00 as an adult. This is for all lifts, rope ways and gondolas. There are shuttles between the resorts that are free. There's bound to be one within 100m of where you're staying or the location may offer the service themselves. Local Taxi's have racks for your boards so you can call or flag one down. I really like Happo-one (hap po O neh) when conditions are right. If it's icy I don't recommend a few of the trailers due to narrow switchbacks. If you stay in the Echoland area walking to downtown is easy. When COVID is gone there's plenty of restaurants to visit. The next large area is near the Happone Gondola. I would avoid the "Big" market when shopping for food. There's plenty of other places that will probably be less crowded.
Hakuba valley is a beautiful place in the Northern Japanese Alps. Although it is most famous for its snow season, you will find the green season and off-season in Hakuba have lots to offer, too. People are relaxed and friendly, you can enjoy locally grown tasty vegetables and a nice variety of restaurants.
Lots of options with a number of resorts to choose from. Very well organised bus and ticket systems with no crowds or waiting in line. Some of the food options in Echoland were expensive. It was difficult to access an ATM so take cash.
Depending on where you stay, there is an efficient bus that will bring you to different areas and all the slopes. It was nice to try different slopes in one visit to Hakuba. Must eat places would be Zen Soba and Izakaya Hie. Breakfast at Penguin Cafe was very cozy.
We were unlucky with the snowfall in feb 2020 but the town is lovely, I enjoyed staying in both the party side in Echoland closer to bus station but also away from it all just a short 10 min walk where the nicer resorts and accomodation were. Plenty of food and drink dining out options but not many accessible ATMs or supermarkets unless u have a car.
We ended up paying the little bit extra for the Premier Grand floor which gives you access to the lounge each day. Firstly, you are treated like royalty from the moment you walk in. Heading to the 45th floor for check-in. They’ll be able to help with anything you need during the stay. The room and amenities are amazing, even down to the quality of soaps etc. They provide a phone for you to use throughout the trip which includes local and international calls and data. Very handy for working out train times, platforms and directions. The club lounge is open for afternoon tea and canapés/drinks each day. The canapés were excellent (prawns, scallops, cheeses etc., they were topped up regularly and included a range of local and international beers, high quality spirits and provides an awesome spot to view the city which you’re enjoying these. We’ll definitely stay here again.
Joanie and her crew really did everything they can to make our stay such a rememberable one. The service was at such an outstanding level. They really do care for their guests, putting themselves in our shoes. Cannot thank you enough for the things they did for us. The facilities were very well equipped and maintained. The food was delicious (breakfast and dinner, thank you Sai-san). The hotel itself was near a bus stop just a couple of minutes walk up hill which gives you easy access to the other resorts (like Goryu and Tsugaike) in the Hakuba Valley. The hotel also gave us a ride in the morning to places in the Happo area and picked us up in the afternoon.
Felt like royalty staying in a perfect traditional tatami room on a futon under a fluffy doona as the snow fell gently which I watched after sliding aside the rice paper screen. The onsen was amazing and everyone was no fuss and welcoming. The traditional breakfast was varied and changed daily. Two minutes walk to bus terminal that is the info centre and pickup for activities. Cannot recommend enough.
Clean and everything is functional.
