The snow was excellent, we came early in the season and still were able to experience some seriously deep powder. With the free shuttle service running between the resorts and the villages it is very easy to get around. Our kids loved the kids snow parks at Goryu and Happo.
Great powder for skiing and snowboarding. Many intermediate runs. We snowboarded st Goryu and hakabu 47 one day and Happo One the second day. Recommend to get the lift pass at base camp. The lift pass is valid at all the ski resorts
Lack of street lights along some alleys and roads. It was pretty dangerous for pedestrians as it was dark and cars are passing by just few feets away from us. Not too many convenience stores around too.
We went very late in the snow season (2nd April) so the snow was slushy and not great to ride but was fine for my first time learner girlfriend. It was also about 24 degrees when we were there so very hot on the mountain. Hakuba itself had some lovely restaurants and good food though a lot of places were closed as the season had ended. Would have liked another full day to explore a little more. We had one full day on the mountain and a half day either side after travelling. I think it’s hay day was the 80s after the Winter Olympics were there but our host recond it was going through a slow revival as westerners arrived during snow season. There are shuttles in and out of town from the resorts, though I think each resort has its own service, so there isn’t one bus that runs up and down the valley. There’s a train station in Hakuba. We got the train from there to Kyoto when we left though there we two or three changeovers, all from within the same stations. We got a bus from Nagayo to Hakuba on our way there which is another option. The bus stop is right outside the station. We were coming from Tokyo Narita Airport and that was pretty straight forward too. All train announcements and signs have an English translation. We ate in Zen (Suba Shibu Zen) which was a nice Japanese experience with decent food. Visit Hakuba dunring the snow season, I’d say it’s much livelier then. Still nice in April. We rented decent gear from the burton place at the bottom of Goryu. All seemed brand new. You can rent gear, get your lift pass and shuttle buses all from the same building. There are chairlifts and gondolas outside there too.
Hakuba is a collection of multiple locations all with access to different ski- fields. I have only experienced staying in Happo village apart from a few meals further out. The wider Hakuba area is well serviced with local buses, shuttles and taxis. Well worth a visit and getting a valley ski pass for lots of variety.
It’s a ski/ snowboard town so focus on being on the mountain then eating out with your new friends made there and going to a close by Onsen every night. Stay close to Happo One station but if don’t plan on skiing much stay in Echoland.

Thank you to our lovely hosts who made the hotel feel like home. They were always smiling and very welcoming. We had breakfast and dinner at the property which was a mixture of western and local foods and both times delicious. Within walking distance to Echoland and a short walk to Happo One, if you didn’t want to use the free shuttle service. Free shuttle bus stop out the front for other parts of hakuba. Lift tickets available at front desk

This is my second time staying at Hotel Hana-na-Sato, I love it here in that it's good value for money, traditional, but welcomes foreigners. The Japanese and English breakfasts are simple but perfect size. The outdoor onsen is frequently empty with great views of the snowy mountains. As with many places in Hakuba they are old, but this hotel is well kept. Would continue to stay here each trip!

This is by far the best place we’ve stayed at in the Japanese Alps ski resorts. Eric and Fumie made our stay exceptional. They are very welcoming and make sure their guests enjoy every moment of their experience in Hakuba, driving us to ski resorts, booking restaurants or cooking great breakfast and diner. Plus the lodge is very cosy, with comfortable rooms, large beds, a big fireplace...
