Hakuba, at least for winter, has much to offer Snowboarders and Skiers. Depending on your skill level there are places that will offer you more at your level. My opinion Goryu is great if you are learning. The slopes are gradual, wide and plentiful. If you like park I can only recommend 47 as I'm not a park rider. If you like powder and trees I "hear" that Cortina is the best but Iwatake was fun a few weeks ago with lots of powder. However there are a few flat spots that if you don't have enough speed you're skating. Tsugaike has Burger King, a plus in my book, and the runs are fun. I haven't covered all the runs on all these locations. I can tell you that Happo One is a must when conditions are good. Now after skiing Echoland offers many places to eat as well as the places near Happo One Gondola area. Depending on where you stay you will need to grab a taxi to reach these places. Depending on how long your stay is I recommend Air BnB or other apartment and house style locations so you have access to a kitchen with refrigerator. Plenty of places to shop for food.
Beautiful place. Loved the weather and fine snow. It was good to see all details online about ski lessons from various schools. It would have been awesome also to have some campaign details known in advance from the schools. Overall a great vacation.
My family could only squeeze together a short weekend trip to Hakuba, but we made the most out of our time there. On the first day my wife, son, and daughter went canoeing on lake Aoki with Dave from Evergreen Outdoor Adventure. In the afternoon they met up with my daughter and I (we spent the day at Hakuba Iwatake MTB park). While they waited for us to finish our last runs down the mountain they took the gondola up and enjoyed the incredible views at the top of Hakuba Iwatake. On the second day my children spent the morning at HakuBounce, while I had the opportunity to take my bike over to Air Time Hakuba. We had a wonderful time at each place!
A hikers paradise. There are so many incredible mountains and views with different levels of difficulty so that anybody can enjoy themselves. Personally hiked up Mount Shirouma from Tsugaike - the views were breathtaking and the summer highland flowers were stunning.
Hakuba valley is one of the most magical places we've visited in Japan. The Japanese Alps under snowfall are just breathtakingly beautiful, as is the village of Hakuba. Everyone we came across be it at a restaurant, bar, cafe, ski rental/ski resort staff etc were so very friendly, accommodating and just made for a wonderful experience. You can tell the locals are happy to see and assist people visiting their town and are pleased for the service travelers bring, the sense of community in Hakuba is tangible, neighbors helping neighbors, such a lovely place. Wish we would have stayed longer. Highly recommend visiting this magical little village, you won't regret it!
Hakuba is a great place to snowboard and after boarding all day there's plenty to do. Unfortunately COVID is not cooperating. I recommend this for anyone staying overnight. Plenty of mountains to choose from with varying levels for any boarder that includes backcountry. Plenty of English language assistance. Right now I recommend chalet style accommodations rather than hotels; however, you will need to provide your food by shopping locally. You can get a full day lift ticket for about $50.00 as an adult. This is for all lifts, rope ways and gondolas. There are shuttles between the resorts that are free. There's bound to be one within 100m of where you're staying or the location may offer the service themselves. Local Taxi's have racks for your boards so you can call or flag one down. I really like Happo-one (hap po O neh) when conditions are right. If it's icy I don't recommend a few of the trailers due to narrow switchbacks. If you stay in the Echoland area walking to downtown is easy. When COVID is gone there's plenty of restaurants to visit. The next large area is near the Happone Gondola. I would avoid the "Big" market when shopping for food. There's plenty of other places that will probably be less crowded.
Hakuba
Very friendly and helpful staff. The manager was extremely accommodating and welcoming. Was always there when I needed anything like when I needed to take a trip to the convenience store or if I wanted to go to a ski resort that is a little further away than Happo One, she always offered me a ride. The breakfast was so tasty, I want the recipe! The beds were so comfy and exactly how I like it. The stay was just so comfortable it felt like I was at home and wanted to stay longer. Good value for money. Would definitely go back again!

We can’t say enough great things about this property in Hakuba!! It was perfect for two couples. It was modern, clean and cozy. We loved that the property came with a car!! It was so convenient getting around town and to the ski resort. The shower had great water pressure, the best we’re super comfortable and the huge flatscreen Tv had Netflix. Everything a cozy cabin in the snow needs! The host was amazing and even gave us a ride to the train station early in the morning. We would 100% recommend Koya to anyone visiting Hakuba!
3 min walk to Kokusai Lift at Happo One as well as the bus shuttle just in front on the road to access other snow fields makes this hotel super convenient! They also operate their own free shuttle for guests to get to restaurants further away. Pub on site as well as a great ski rental place just across from the hotel. Beach bar is also a 3 min walk away. Great English speaking staff who are always helpful. Also has an onsen which made it perfect after a great day on the snow fields.
Hakuba
Thank you for the hospitality. The kindness and generosity of staffs have touched my heart during my stay. The location is great, it’s close to everything, transportation, sightseeing spot, restaurants, and shopping. The hotel is very clean and nice decoration. The service is the best that I ever experienced in Japan. I would recommend everyone to book it now when you see my review. Of course, I will recommend this property to my friend and will book for my future trip to Hakuba.
Hakuba
The family-run lodge was the perfect place for us. Simple but extremely clean, comfortable beds and warm fireplace to sit next to in the evenings after a day in the slopes. On a hill right next to an historical shrine surrounded by forest. It was like a fairy tail. Location is good, near the Nakiyama lifts at Happo One. But note you have to walk up a steep hill at the end of the day. It was a lovely experience, great value, and would stay again.
Hakuba
We previously stayed at Rob & Yoshi's B&B in the 2019 ski season and had a great stay again in 2020. One in our group was a repeat customer for 3 years! Comfortable rooms, a great location very close to the complimentary shuttles to ski mountains Goryu, 47 and Happo one along with walking distance to the plethora of restaurants and bars in echoland make Chateau Lausanne a great choice.
Breakfast was great! They catered to our needs plus was a great variety. Staff were all very helpful and friendly. We bought our lift passes for the Goryu mountain at the hotel and it was cheaper. The location was great, walkable to the mountain but not the ski in and ski out that I thought it would be. Was within walking distance to a few restaurants. Onsen was great!
The exterior of the building and surrounds were pretty. The rooms were small but clean, warm and inviting. The bus stop for the ski resort shuttles was right outside which was fabulous. It was a 10 minute walk to services, bars and restaurants. The offer of pick up and drop off to the Hakuba Bus Station was very helpful on arrival and departure.
Hotel and staff were great! Location was perfect to Happo One lift and Happo 47 shuttle was at our front door. Good happy hour, breakfast, and best gyoza at the restaurant! Short walk to plenty of restaurants in Happo and Echoland...Would definitely stay here again!
Nice big rooms for a family of four Super helpful staff - thanks Jess and Remi Shuttle bus for ski areas at front of hotel Free night shuttle to Echoland for dinner
Hakuba
Great family run hotel.Good location for shuttle bus to ski lifts and also an easy walk to Echoland's main street for restaurants and bars.
I liked the nice clean room, it had everything I needed. The price was nice, and Arumu is very close to Goryu Ski Resort.
Stayed at Penke Panke lodge for nearly 2 weeks to enjoy Hakuba ski area. The owner & staff was absolutely the highlight of this stay, as they did whatever they could to make my stay as comfortable as possible. The location of the lodge was also very convenient to walk to Sakka slopes and hit up Happo-One. Penke Panke offered shuttles to supermarkets or other ski resorts whenever it's possible. The morning hot breakfast was fantastic, as I didn't have the same meal twice during my 2 week stay. The facilities was well maintained, and included an organized dry room, laundry machines, cozy lounge, and a nice hot bath. The snow shoveling was adequate and timely, so even if you drove, you don't need to worry about having to dig your car out. Honestly, I've stayed in many much more expensive or high end hotels in the past, but Penke Panke's customer service made this one of the best hotel experiences I've ever had.
What an absolutely fabulous stay! Tony and his family are just the kindest, nicest people and they really went out of their way to make sure our stay was perfect. Food was great, rooms and beds super comfortable and the evening drinks at the bar a perfect way to round off the day. can’t wait to visit again!
I spent fantastic days in Hakuba and especially at the Echo Hotel. The hotel is clean, comfortable, and the staff was friendly. I want to thank Mr. Kato for his dedication to making sure we had a wonderful stay.
This is our second time staying at the Hakuba Gondola Hotel, and you cannot beat the VALUE and the LOCATION. The owner is a nice Australian guy, and he is very helpful and accommodating.
