Nozawa Onsen is one of my favourite towns in all of Japan. A great place in winter for a true Japanese skiing holiday - great local food, friendly locals and stunning scenery as well as great skiing - particulalry for families. The ski resort has plenty of runs suitable for children and a free kids park that the kids can enjoy when they finish skiing for the day. Lots of great restaurants in town and on the mountain - both Japanese and Western food at reasonable prices
Incredible restaurants, we especially liked tanuki. The foot bath outside the bar shiro was a great way to relax without committing to the onsen. Going up the gondola hosted an incredible view. The town is absolutely stunning in the snow. Close enough to go and check out the snow monkeys by car or in a tour!
I loved the experience of a traditional Japanese room in the beautiful setting of Nozawa Onsen. The man who checked me in was very nice and explained everything fantastically even though he claimed at first he couldn't speak English (I could understand him very well!). I didn't eat at Marunaka so can't comment on the food. The onsen downstairs is lovely, but the opening hours (4pm to 11pm) were restrictive for me (I like to bathe in the morning and was in a room with shared bathroom, so the downstairs onsen was the only option). The location is great, in easy walking distance to everything in Nozawaonsen.
Awesome town and great cultural experience with the onsens. Not my personal favourite in terms of ski fields but still great ski areas to enjoy. Great food/ dining options also and convenient to travel to / from.
A small town with various choices of restaurants. Transportation was easy with high speed train and shuttle bus. Interesting slopes for different levels of skiers. Natural onsen of course is the excellent attraction in this little place.
Fabulous traditional rural community overlain with ski support services and attractions. Great local places to eat out and sample the full gamut of Japanese fare (ramen, seafood galore, sake, Japanese pancakes, etc) - all tiny and atmospheric. Love the fact that English is not widely spoken in the village and there are only 1 or 2 ATMs so the place doesn’t feel saturated by tourism. Is easy to avoid the 2 or 3 westernised bars where the Aussie young hang out. Very easy to walk everywhere - absolutely no need for a car (in fact it would be a nuisance)and great for kids, as long as they are a little older and capable of staying safe among the multiple water hazards - i.e. boiling hot onsens that you wouldn’t put your head under, and deep drains on every street with high and constant fast water flow.
