We loved the fact that it is a small and traditional village. It was fantastic to stay with and live with the locals. The skiing is amazing and even though it wasn't a great year for skiing this year, it was still some of the best we have experienced. We tried a lot of places to eat including the street food and everywhere was delicious. Although we'd have to say that Marushige, (where we stayed), provided the most delicious meals of our trip. At first the little winding streets give you the feeling you will get lost but it never happened. It was very easy to find our way around the town and it almost becomes automatic. Our family loved the onsen experience. Although a little daunting at first, once you do it once then the nervousness disappears. I wouldn't do anything differently next time we go, except maybe stay a little longer. We loved Nozawa Onsen and hope that it never loses it's charm, character and traditional ways.
Get your ski gear sent to the accommodation directly from the Japanese airports - very easy and cheap! We used the Black Cat service (AU$50 to send 2 suitcases) Yamato Transport Co. was the company name - ABC counter at the airport. We found renting snowboard gear better value from the village ski shops rather than up on the slopes. We were able to store our gear where we were staying and was only a 5 min walk to the Yu Road up to the slopes. In the village at Nozawa, make sure you sample as many of the local eateries as possible. There are a range of prices for similar dishes - don't judge a book by it's cover! The dodgiest looking establishments were often the tastiest and best value for money and not many are signed in English so use the guide book and identify them by the pics. Try the onsens but make sure you follow the rules for bathing. You will need to pay for most things in cash so get a travel card loaded with Yen and take out cash at any 7-Eleven in other cities or the local Post Office when in the village of Nozawa Onsen. Enjoy!
Lovely village atmosphere and excellent location to the snow. A bit difficult to get restaurant bookings especially for a big group like ours of 4 adults and 5 kids. Very friendly town with lovely bath houses and great food. Kawahiro Lodge is very traditional and friendly and Mt Dock is superb for executive ski rentals and good coffee!
Nozawa Onsen is a Japanese alpine village, and we enjoyed exploring the village and experiencing some of the culture and local practices, like watching the local residents cooking their vegetables in one of the many "onsens" (hot springs) in the area. We also happened to be in Nozawa Onsen during their famous annual Dosojin Fire Festival, which was an amazing experience! The skiing and snowboarding at the Ski Resort was also excellent.
The runs are a bit too flat at parts and it seems to be an endless changing of chairs to get back to the top. Great for beginners and experts but lacks a bit of intermediate terrain. Great village with loads of food options. The onsens are a must. Perfect for young kids though the ski lessons are not cheap. Take a trip to the snow monkey park!
Nozawa Onsen is an excellent place to ski. It has a huge number of slopes and a great range of difficulty. I have been twice and would return again. It's out favourite mountain in Japan ( we have also been to Madarao and Niseko) .
