Mount Haguro, Tsuruoka
Surrounded by sacred mountains and untouched nature, Tamonkan is housed in a historic Japanese-style building. Complimentary tea and snacks are served to welcome guests. Accessible by bus. The room I had was magnificent with antiques and a great futon. It was spotlessly clean too. Baths available at will. The owners were very nice, discreet and helpful and the food was luxurious. Thank you.
I came at the wrong time of year. Gassan was already closed, but it wasn't late enough in the season for momiji. The shuttle bus for Yudonosan only runs on weekends, so next time I'll have to rent a car. There are plenty of public baths and onsens to relax in after exploring the town and climbing mountains!!! I'll have to go again before they harvest the rice fields though. I bet the scenery will be beautiful!!!
Went there to visit the Dewa Sanzan, it was a wonderful trip, better than I could have imagined! Stayed in an Onsen Ryokan in Atsumi Onsen a short trip away from Tsuruoka. So was eating at the Ryokan.
I wanted to go to churenji/dainichibo/honmyoji but transport was crap for New Year’s Eve. I understand this but nowhere on the sites or information did it say the schedule had changed. I ended up going to nangakuji with a nice but half interested obachan who didn’t really sell me the banal setting of the temple. The living Buddha was cool but no pictures could be taken and the whole experience which was probably less than 5 minutes left me wanting. There were no buses or taxis back so I had to walk 40 minutes back to the station(in the snow). It sucked. So This place has potential but it’s really gotta work on transport for tourists in 2020. Though the lady at the tourist information office was super nice, helpful and cool.
