Hotel in Tsuruoka
Offering free WiFi, APA Hotel Yamagata Tsuruoka Ekimae is set in Tsuruoka. The property is around 6.2 mi from Kamo Aquarium and 16 mi from Atsumi Onsen. The restaurant serves Japanese cuisine. The hotel is fantastically located, directly opposite the Tsuruoka train station and bus stops that go around the city. The area around the hotel is nice and only about a five minutes from the main shopping mall and highway bus terminal. The staff were extremely helpful. They helped us find the right buses for where we wanted to go and stored our luggage for the day when we checked out. The hotel is kept very clean, with lots of hand sanitiser available in public areas and lots of social distancing measures. We also had breakfast in the hotel, which was lovely. It is a buffet style breakfast and customers are required to sanitise their hands and put plastic gloves on before touching any of the food serving equipment, which I thought was very good to see!

I came at the wrong time of year. Gassan was already closed, but it wasn't late enough in the season for momiji. The shuttle bus for Yudonosan only runs on weekends, so next time I'll have to rent a car. There are plenty of public baths and onsens to relax in after exploring the town and climbing mountains!!! I'll have to go again before they harvest the rice fields though. I bet the scenery will be beautiful!!!
Went there to visit the Dewa Sanzan, it was a wonderful trip, better than I could have imagined! Stayed in an Onsen Ryokan in Atsumi Onsen a short trip away from Tsuruoka. So was eating at the Ryokan.
I wanted to go to churenji/dainichibo/honmyoji but transport was crap for New Year’s Eve. I understand this but nowhere on the sites or information did it say the schedule had changed. I ended up going to nangakuji with a nice but half interested obachan who didn’t really sell me the banal setting of the temple. The living Buddha was cool but no pictures could be taken and the whole experience which was probably less than 5 minutes left me wanting. There were no buses or taxis back so I had to walk 40 minutes back to the station(in the snow). It sucked. So This place has potential but it’s really gotta work on transport for tourists in 2020. Though the lady at the tourist information office was super nice, helpful and cool.
