It is situated at the northmost town of Hokkaido. Staying next to eki help with transportation and moving around. Famous for their seafood, Cape Soya for her black cow steak. Winter is a nice get away for busy people. Despite local trying to promote tourism here, lack of interest by both tourist as well as local. Summer is good time to drop by. The whole place is covered with wild daisy flowers. The temperature is very comfortable. Wakkanai park, one can still see late sakura here. Noshapu sunset is beautiful. If one is lucky, you may even observe parhelion or sun dog. If you are taking the ferry to Rebun island, do go to the dock to see swimming oracs. I had observed hundreds but they did not surface due to fear of been hunted. I like Wakkanai, both summer as well as winter.
It's a lovely place at the very northernmost part of Hokkaido. Highly recommend having a car, bit be careful of local wildlife, especially outside Wakkanai proper. Also recommend the White Path, though it's a bit out of the way (near Cape Soya); beautiful landscape and so many Hokkaido deer.
For northern countries and snow lovers, Wakkanai is not big, there isn't even a 7-Eleven nor a family mart, but it definitely is a bucket list city, not to mention the northernmost point in Japan that is just a bus ride from there !
Great city..with many places of interest and diversed activities . Rishiri and Rebun island really compliment the stay in Wakkanai...the wilderness and flowers in the summer are great .. .food are great ..sea food in general ..the urchin and squid in particalur.
Views. We went in early April so not much going on. Walked to Cape near aquarium to find it closed. Also because of snow the monument area overlooking Wakkanai wasnt yet open for the spring. There was more litter in Wakkanai than we have seen everywhere else in Japan. This could be the effect of the wind, sea currents and snow melt. The harbour area near hotel very nice. Cape Soya, a 40 minute, 2500 Yen return bus ride away is stunning.
I went in October so there was not much to do after dark. It seems like a summer town. It is very easy to get around using local bus and JR train. Only issue is that since it was off season the train schedule was not reliable and the restaurants closed early or did not open at all.
Nice big rooms, a proper hotel, big bathroom, a couple chairs, desk, good size tv, pretty comfortable beds. The staff saved me, a spoke on my bike broke and they found someone who could fix my bike that day, I’m cycling Hokkaido, bike is the most important thing... The food at the restaurant was good and reasonably priced.
Helpful staff, no fuss about changing room. Good breakfast, excellent onsen, massage chairs. Very convenient for Minami Wakkanai station..easy 2km walk into Wakkanai, or bus or train. I enjoyed my stay very much.. quiet and relaxing, room comfortable with firm mattress.
