The staff acted hospitably above and beyond my expectations. We arrived very early in the morning, but there was someone there to help us. They really went out of their way to make our stay extra special!!! They even gave us a ride to the monkey park and back! We visited the monkey park and sora terrace. It's a little far from the onsen town, but Housei has its own natural onsen and even onsen inside private rooms!

Boasting open-air hot spring baths, a heated indoor pool and beautiful Japanese gardens, Senjukaku offers traditional Japanese-style accommodations that has a historic charm. The superior Japanese room with breakfast and dinner was amazing! We had a huge private onsen in our room. The staff was so nice and accommodating. There is a free shuttle to snow money park and to the Nagano train station. Loved our stay and highly recommend. Our nine year old son enjoyed the onsen as well. The water was not too hot and he soaked every morning and every night with us. Love. Love. Love.
This is a bunch of small towns with onsens, traditional arts museums, and historical museums. But in the same time you can find a lot of lovely nature spots - see the wild onsens, monkeys, waterfalls, mountains trails, etc.
It's a pretty quiet town (but we did visit during the virus, so couldn't accurately judge this). Beautiful mountain panoramas and a good selection of restaurants. Would especially recommend Hakko and Goen.
Monkey Park is good for first timer, apart from this, winter time is good for snowboarder, must visit ShigaKogen Ski Resort, because base lift is above 1000m, much better snow then Hakuba, to me, One of the best Snow Resort in Nagano Prefecture. Yamanouchi split in to 2 zone, the tourism zone on the top and non tourism zone at the bottom, I prefer the non tourism area, people are more real and food are cheaper yet taste better and fresher. Restaurant to visit Soba Yariya by a humble family, and Jin Sushi run by owner chef, cheaper and good quality then those tourism area. Enjoy yourself!
Shibu Onsen itself isn't that big (basically one street), but very authentic - it's a great jump-off point for exploring the nearby area and well-connected to Nagano. I loved the town after dark when everyone is walking around in their yukata. There is no late-night convenience store nearby, so if you need anything for your trip the next day, best get everything you need in Yudanaka or Nagano. I went for the onsen (which were lovely) but also went to the Snow Monkey Park as it is close by. It is a cute experience seeing the monkeys running around, but the area is very small and if you spend half an hour, you've seen everything (twice, probably) and it's a hassle to get to (2KM walk through the forest, with really muddy, slippery roads). I imagine it would be nicer / less hassle in the summer.
Shiga Kogen is a huge resort to ski. You can ski all day with skiing the same run twice if you want to! Excellent snow too. Make sure you book dinners in Ichinose if your accomodation doesn't include dinner. Ichinose is the best area to stay as it's central and has the most restaurants and shops.
Yamanouchi
It's very conveniently located close to the Yudanaka station. There are plenty of good restaurants for your choice, and 9 public onsens to use for free. The hotel owners are very nice couples with good English, they picked up us and dropped us off from the station. The hotel room is spacious and clean with traditional tatami setting, with private bathroom. It has two indoor onsens and one outdoor onsen (24 hours). We will come back for sure and we strongly recommend it.
Yamanouchi
It was an absolute mind-blowing experience of staying in Ryokan for the first time. The hotel is super quiet, with three (2 public + 1 private) onsens. We ordered a dinner and it was magical, full dive into Japanese traditions. Before coming we were a bit concerned that it might be cold inside the room (since we traveled in January) but it wasn't. There is a thermostat inside, so you can control the temperature. Location is great, right next to the walking street.
Yamanouchi
It was a charming experience to stay in a traditional Japanese hotel surrounded by the beautiful mountains. We got a corner room and the views were amazing! We found the bedding very comfortable and the room was very warm and cozy upon our arrival. We enjoyed the Onsen very much and for those of you who are unsure - yes, you do go into the Onsen without a swimsuit or anything else on your body (male and female have separate baths and dressing rooms)
Yamanouchi
Extremely welcoming and helpful staff! Ride to the monkey park, free of charge was more than we expected. Breakfast was delicious. There was a variety of food, from the usual western breakfast to traditional Japanese dishes. We didn't reserve dinner, but there is a cute little diner just 50 meters away from the hotel with excellent food, domestic atmosphere, fantastic staff and reasonable prices.

- Location - in middle of historic Shibu Onsen - The vibes - friendly, casual, international environment in a historic house, we felt at ease, privacy in the rooms while common cafe with nice feel and seating area - The food - amazingly delicious dinner and breakfast. suiting both Japanese and western cuisine. - The hosts - friendly, courteous, welcoming, helpful and easy to communicate with

Nice traditional ryokan. Owner was very helpful, driving me to and from the monkey park - he even picked me up from there after I spent an additional night at another hotel in the snow monkey park, which was very good of him. They also offer to lend you boots to hike through the snow to the monkey park - I had suitable boots so didn't need this, but this would have been good otherwise.
Yamanouchi
The room was very large and comfortable, the staff was nice and brought us back and forth from the mountain by private shuttle, so that we could avoid driving ourselves. The hotel is in a lovely location: a bit isolated (you need a car to reach it), but pretty nicely immersed in deep snow. You can enjoy the mountains from the large open window while taking a bath!
Yamanouchi
This was my first Ryokan experience, and I loved it. The reception was warm, friendly, and attentive. They also provided a shuttle to the monkey park the next morning. It is located on a walkable street with some shops, restaurants and onsens which you will have access to as a guest of the Ryokan. The onsite open air onsen was really nice.
Yamanouchi
Owners are a very friendly couple Food is simple but good and quite large quantity Room is big, view is nice, comfortable futon Onsen is at perfect temperature, not too hot not too cold Very close to the monkey park entrance and Shibu onsen, owners offered me a ride to the park entrance

The hotel was excellent and everything you need for a great snow holiday. Restaurant is good enough to never need to leave but area is accessible enough that you can go explore easily.

The hotel was beautiful! A shuttles picked us up from the train station even though I had not requested it or told them what time we were arriving. An English speaking staff member greeted us at the door and continued to be extremely helpful throughout our whole trip! Japanese style room was very clean and comfortable. We reserved the private onsen on the roof, it was a great price for an unforgettable experience. Meals were great and could not beat the location. Very central to yudanaka station and nearby restaurants.
We loved the hotel’s onsen and it’s location to hills that are perfect for our kids first ski lessons! The staff were all incredibly friendly and fun to talk with.
