A great home away from home - super large apartment with washing machine, microwave, fridge etc which made self catering very easy. Really clean place and very comfy lounge etc. Clyde the owner was very helpful and friendly. We loved Sumo the dog too!! You ideally need a car to get to the property and travel round from it, but I’d recommend hiring a car anyway as the island has so much to offer.
Located in Kittitian Village, Silver Reefs apartment features air-conditioned accommodations with a patio and free WiFi. This apartment features a garden and free private parking. I love the environment, it is quiet, the rooms are spacious, clean and very comfortable. My husband and children loved it. Me and my will be back December for Christmas or my birthday. I have already started recommending silver reef to my friends and family.
Basseterre itself is not pretty at all. There is trash all over and it is very rundown. The beach areas such as Carambola, Shipwreck beach, Reggae beach area, Nevis and Hyatt/Marriott properties are lovely but require a car or taxi to visit. I visited 7 years ago and had a much different experience. I hope they can get the trash issue under control.
We have a spectacular carnival every Sunday at least from January to the carnival w/e and shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. For carnival Tuesday thousands of islanders come to see the mega parade with great music, dancing and costumes. On Ash Wednesday everyone wears black and white and joins in the dancing parades to celebrate the death of carnival until the next year. For hikers we are under the volcano and have a good little marina for yachtsmen nearby and an interesting market. Also several very good restaurants and snack bars plus a seafront where locals can spend the evening strolling along and eating hamburgers or pancakes. It's only a small town but worth a visit.
The National Museum was interesting. The city itself was nice for it's independence square and the old church. I climbed the tower for a really great view! Also Port Zante with all the little shops was nice and a lot of opportunity to go somewhere for lunch or just for a drink. However the directions, when you're driving a car, could be a bit better. I got lost several times.
Basseterre has that old english colonial atmosphere. Not much to do and see in particular, but you get that feeling that time proceeds slower there. (I have been living in rather hectic Sint Maarten for 15 years now.) One day will certainly be enough for this "town". What you should do are the hikes in the hills and visit the small villages on the main road around the island. And there are some pleasant beach bars on the southern peninsula.
